I'm specing out a new 3500 MegaCab 4x4 for order in August. The RamBoxes look useful. Are there any downsides other than they are kinda ugly?

Thanks,

Do they reduce the amount of open cargo area? Possibly limit options for other configs. (topper, ladder racks, headache bars)?
I think they are ugly, but reading a bit in other forums, the guys that have them, mostly love-em.

You do lose a fair amount of space in the bed, however, it may be offset by the extra space of the Rambox. Just depends on a person's needs.

IMHO, they are a poor choice for a working truck. They narrow the bed considerably and are not built to store heavy or bulky items. I'm sure they're fine for fishing gear or shooting supplies but they weren't what I'd hoped for when I was considering them. Of coarse what really put the final nail in the coffin was the fact they're not available in an 8' box.

Although it would be nice to have them for the lockable storage I would never buy them as they take too much away from the box for my 5er and the things I use it for.

I agree with everyone else. Ram boxes are more of a novelty item. If they could beef them up, and offer it to the longbox crowd, I feel that Chrysler would have a better following.

I have them and I love them! Yes the bed is narrower but I don't care. The utility of the boxes for us is when camping all of the junk that I used to have in boxes in the floor of the bed is now east to get to and find. I don't ever want a topper/cap on my truck (maybe I'm not old enough yet?) so that's no big deal and I can still get sheets of plywood in so...
'the one drawback I've found is that there are no aftermarket racks for the bed that work with a tonneau...
'there are custom solutions I have seen though.
it was one of the things that drew me to Ram in the first place!

I kind of had my doubts about them when I ordered. I will admit that I really got used to them pretty fast when I was able to keep all my little things like oil, tools, etc that you normally take with you on a trip. Sure beats having them flying around in back of the truck or putting everything in a plastic container. These are plastic containers. Seem pretty durable too. Except for one thing, and everyone that has the Ram Boxes needs to check and see if they are actually locking when you lock your doors. I discovered, by accident, that one of my lids wasn't even locked when the truck was locked up. Who knows how long ago this happened, but one of the little green clips that hold the locking/unlocking mechanism in place had broken off. These are pretty thin at the point where you push them in, and I can see why they would break easy. I bought 4 extra for under $12.00 just in case the other ones crap out.

As far as losing space in the bed, I don't really see this as a problem as I just wound up using a Sidewinder pin box on my 5th Wheel to compensate for the wheel well area being taken up by the Ram Boxes. I think this is a better solution anyway for all short bed trucks pulling a 5th wheel, even without the Ram Boxes. No sliders needed at all, and I don't even come close to hitting the cab. Best thing I ever seen.

Also, I think that the Ram Boxes make the truck look good. It just looks more rounded and robust instead of just a squared off truck bed. Just my opinions. Thanks

Never wanted a Ram Box, and NEVER wanted a topper for my truck...and I'm almost 66 yrs. old...So don't say you have to be old to want a topper for a truck...age has nothing to do with it.

I have had a canopy on my trucks since I was in my early 30's, and they have all been tall ones. I like to be able to keep thing dry and secure and keep the snow out in winter.

From the pivot point of the king pin to the rear of the pin box this may interfere with the Ram Box as this pivots when turning the trailer. Another point you may not be able to use the Ram Box when the trailer is attached; since the clearance from the top of the bed to the underside of the trailer is between 5 and 6 inches of clearance if you are lucky.
