During the past two weeks my RPM's will fall to idle while hwy speed. So, I push in the clutch and cycle the accelerator pedal two or three times until RPM's come back (engine responds to pedal) and then let the clutch out and keep driving. The check engine light then comes on and will stay on for the rest of the day. The next day no light and maybe even no dead pedal.

What's going on? And where's the best place to buy the parts to fix it?

First, buy or borrow a code reader and check for DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), then report back here what you've found and we'll try to help you nail down the cause. If you're lucky it could just be the APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor), but Forrest may be right in that it could be a failing Bosch VP44 fuel injection pump.

I've heard some auto parts stores will have a code reader they'll use to check for DTC's for you (hoping to get your business), but they're not expensive... Wal-Mart even sells them.

Also, we'll be able to help you more efficiently if you'll go into your account and add the particulars about your truck to your signature.

Best regards,

John L.

Sorry about the signature, thought I had it done. '99 3500 5sp, 60hp VanAaken, Holley Blue with low pressure light, Banks Brake, pyro/boost

The local advance auto scanned it and said Throtle position sensor. What do ya'll think?

this is happening to me too, I have my truck in the body shop and don't have the 2 codes I'm getting right in front of me, they're in the truck, I think mine is the apps and some sensors. there was just another thread on this a couple of weeks ago, if you want I'll see if I can find it

If that's what the computer is saying, then you're lucky. Get in touch with Timbo here on TDR, and he'll set you up with an APPS for about $400 less than Dodge will try to sell you one for.

might be, but usually an AAPS is consistantly messed up... if you're just getting random dead pedal, my money is on the injection pump

It sounded a lot like my APPS when it went out. Mine would go to an idle once or twice a day and then three days of no problems. My roadside fix was to shut the engine off and restart.

If it turns out to be the APPS I would highly recommend getting a Williams APPS and be done with it. Williams makes a commercial grade APPS for big rigs that will bolt right up to our Cummins engine. You will need a jumper cable (check with "timbo" here on TDR) for the electronics but it's basically plug and play.

See if the codes are P1693 and P0253. That should indicate a bad VP44...

APPS may provide codes P0121, 122, or 123...
