92 intercooler questions

I have a couple questions that I would love some information about. #1) How much leakage is acceptable in your intercooler? I recently preformed a leak test on my intercooler (soapy water, blank 2 1/2" plug, and 1 plug with valve stem) I reduced my air line to 15psi and gave a small shot of air. My neighbor how I had watching for bubbles, says "uuuhhh!" I said "uuuhh what?" I walked up front to find 30-40 bubbles all over the fins on the intercooler! :--)

Obviously it holds no air pressure. I do believe my truck has the 21cm turbo and without pulling anything I can get the boost up to around 8 (up a steep grade). I then began to look for a new one. Dodge does not make them anymore. :( I then went to Banks Yeah! :D they have it!$900. 00 for the techni cooler, boost tubes, boots... :--) I bit the bullet and ordered it (special order 2-3 weeks. I then got and e-mail: "We regret to inform you the Banks part you ordered (25952) has been discontinued. If you could contact us at your convenience we can get a replacement part (if available) and take steps to resolve your order. Again I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Feel free to visit our message boards and website to talk to other customers or browse other parts we may have to replace this one. " Which brings me to the #2) question. Anyone know where I can get a replacement if necessary?

Piers diesel research had a few a couple of months ago. Give them a call. I don't have their number handy, but look at their web site. They will be able to help.

Thanks, DValentine! I got one on order today. Now I have to look for a intercooler shop or radiator shop around Erie, Pa. that would be interested in my old one for a core.

Hi Raptor, if you ordered an I/C from piers they would like your end tanks back for a core so they can build more. I got one from them a couple of months ago, my boost pressure went from 16 to 22. my cooler was cheesecloth. Works good and EGT's went way down. Good luck! ;)

Hi Raptor, I am a new member, sorry I wasn't up and running several days ago. I have a stock intercooler from my still running '92. I put on a Banks system years ago and this ones been on a shelf since about'98. If your order doesn't go through let me know.

Welcome Greg, hope you enjoy your stay. There are many personable folks here, and a heck of a collective body of knowledge, ever expanding.

With that said, I am sure you'll be able to move that intercooler.

ps: This is the place for questions and answers... . the discontinued forum is for the solutions/work arounds'/replacement parts/sources etc...

Thanks for all your help guys, I'm fairly new myself (2 post, but a lot of reading and hence the posting of they question in the wrong area... Thanks Pastor). I called Piers yesterday and they said it was on back order, this week to their facility. When I ordered the I/C they told me they used to buy the old ones for the end tanks but sense then they have been having their own made. So I decided to use the time replacing the front leaves and putting in an add-a-leaf. I, with a small budget, went with the cheaper JC Whitney ones (made in Canada and the add a leaf has painted right on it Rough Country) all for around $200. 00.

You'll need that add-a-leaf if you're using any JC/junk crap Whitney leaf springs. Are you replacing because they sag? Well you'll be in for a shock when you remove the sagging stock leaves and put them next to the new JCW leaves. The JCW leaves will have the same arch as the sagging stockers. Measure wheelwell height before and after. Been there done that. Note to others, don't ever buy JC Whitney leaf springs or any of their junk for that matter. ;).

I did notice that. And was shocked! Then bought the add a leaf. It was a little smoother for the weak I did drive it with them in it. I guess that's the difference between having 1 finger clearance between bump stop and leaf to 2 finger clearance. In this case 2 fingers ARE better than one! :-laf :-laf With add a leaf gives me 3 1/2 fingers (3") :D Measurements before and after: F37. 5/R40 - F40/R40. I did buy a replacement tail light assem. from them and it was in good shape but I will agree with you on the JC Whimpy. :-laf

My Cummins manual states the following for testing intercooler:

Apply 40 psi of air pressure to cooler. If the pressure drop is 5 psi or less in 15 seconds, the cooler is usable.

If the pressure drop is greater then 5 psi in 15 seconds, the cooler MUST be repaired or replaced.
