Looking for suggestions for rat bait to use in the old style snap traps. Tried some bread and jelly yesterday. That just got swiped #@$%! Today I tried some ham and cheese rolled up and tied onto the trigger with sewing thread. Went out for a couple of hours and Oo. Oo. Little booger didn't even get one bite. Hopefully will get one or two more tonight.

If there are any other tricks, baits, trap mods :-laf and such, I'll see if I can give 'em a try. Only have a few more days on vacation here. Hoping to maximize the number of dead rats. :D

They love peanut butter. Smear it down deep into the trigger. They'll get greedy trying to finish their snack and pay dearly.

I`ve always had good luck with apples. Hook the skin on the trigger.

A recent "this old house" magazine suggested to bait unsprung traps for a few days On the day you set the triggers, you get a tremendous knockdown.

My grandpa taught me to cut up dry sponges into smaller pieces and put a few drops of bacon grease on them and scatter them around. The rats eat the sponge and it swells up in thier throat or stomach killing them. Where there is 1 dead rat the rest will leave that area.

I have tried it and it works excellent.

Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Another one this morning. Put a little peanut butter on the backside of the trigger. Sweet. :D:D Thanks for all the suggestions.

I use crunchy peanut butter. I force a nut right into the curl on the trigger. They just kill themselves trying to get it out! :-laf

The same techniques using peanut butter also work using Cheezwiz or Spray Cheese. Just make sure the cheese is wrapped around the trigger plate so they have to work to get it off. Happy hunting!

Letting them eat Cheezwiz is bad for their health. That stuff could kill them:-laf

Jay, I've come to the conclusion that you are a badly twisted pervert! No wonder we get along so well! :D :-laf

Got this off the Florida Grower web site for mice (no I don't grow anything just sell it. )

One gallon apple cider vineger to two gallons of water in watering can pour around perimeter of the area you want rats to stay away from once a month. The farmer who posted this used it around his feed shed. I use around my fence and potato tables( the rats like my potatoes the best).

Some times have to use rat poision the first time I pour it for the summer but I'm free of rats for the rest of year.
