Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Rating on 12v?

What is the service life on a newer 12v (96 and up) in miles? Also, do these engines have cats on them if they are federal emissions? Do the engines have oil cooled pistons like the new ho's?

In a medium duty truck the ISB 24 valve was rated at 300,000 mi life expectancy. Considering that most medium duty trucks haul heavier loads more frequently and the engine turns more rpm's per mile because of gearing the above rating is meaningless. There are several examples of the B5. 9 Cummins lasting for 4, 5, 6, hundred thousand miles. In the TDR rag there have been two recent stories on million mile trucks, one of which had the original engine. Serviced properly and not abused I would expect mine to last 6 to 7 hundred thousand miles.



Do not know about the cats or oil cooled pistons.

My '94 had a cat, my '98. 4 still has a cat on it.



I have personally seen a 2nd Gen with ~850k on the clock. The truck was used for hauling campers between Indiana and California. The 2nd owner plows snow in the winter and sled pulls in the summer with it.

my 94 doesn't have a cat and from what I can tell never had one to begin with.

All the 94's built after Jan,1,1994 had a cat thanks to the EPA

My 94 was built in Feb & has... oops... had one.

Yep you guys are right. I typed in a 6 when I meant a 4. And I even reread it a couple of times and didn`t catch it.

sewman, right everything after Jan. 1, 1994 to when they went to the 24V in mid 1998 had a Cat. when they were built and shipped.
