I just finished a battle with a clutch installation on my 99 3500 6 spd. I thought I had won but when I fired up the truck I now have a rattle in neutral. The clutch works great and shifts fantastic and no rattle when in gear but setting at a stop in neutral with the clutch release it really raises a racket.

Any ideas what it might be??? I sure am dreading pulling the transmission again!!! It about whupped me last time when it fell off the jack!!!!

Thanks

Don

I put a clutch plate in a Chevy truck one time long ago and turned the springs toward the flywheel, made lots of noise, hope that is not your problem. bg

It is a Southbend Clutch. It went in fine and works great. So much nicer than what was in it. I am thinkin I may have got the trans in a bind goin back in and maybe pushed the pilot brg out the other side and it is allowing the mainshaft to rattle around.

I checked and double checked the clutch disk to make sure it was installed correctly. The tear down will tell!!!

Use a chain to hold it to the jack.

The second time is eaiser. I've done two of them now, and the second one should have been done, start to finish, in four hours (wrong clutch kit).

Let us know what you find!

Very good advice!! I had it chained down until I needed to move the chains to access the bolts. A good and darned expensive lesson learned!!

When I put my south bend clutch in my truck a couple of weeks ago, the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel were shouldered and the holes in the flywheel were countersunk. The new flywheel did not have countersunk holes so the new pressure plate would'nt snug up against the flywheel. I went to the harware store and bought 8 new grade 8 bolts and used loc-tite. I called south bend about it but they never called me back. Piers diesel said it had been a long time since they had seen a flywheel with countersunk holes. Don't know if this pertains to you but if you used the stock bolts and the pressure plate was'nt snugged up against the flywheel then maybe thats whats rattling.
