I have a 96 4x4 5-speed and I recently noticed a rattling, almost buzzing, when I push in the clutch during shifts. The noise sounds like something is laying in the shift boot or a shifter knob is loose.

The noise can be produced by pushing in the clutch at a stand still and reving to about 2,000 rpm. Above or below that speed there is no noise. It does it in every gear including neutral and will stop immediately when the clutch starts to engage. I hear no other abnormal noises. It almost seems like the internal transmission components simply rattling. Could this be a throw out bearing or pilot bushing? My roller pilot bearing was replaced sometime ago by a bushing.

This is not infamous transfer shifter rattle.

Any ideas?

I do not currently have a manual but the sound you descirbe is exactly like the sounds we would get out of the cars we raced when throw out bearing went out. Seemed we couldn't keep the bearing together with the high spring loads we needed for the cars.
