When I shift into reverse or drive - more so into drive, I get for just about a second a rattling sound from the passenger side dash area. It happens as the transmission engages it drops the rpms just a hair and as the rpm drops is when it does it. As soon as the rpms stabilize again a second later it goes away again. I poked around that area but cannot locate source. Has anyone had this happen that help me out on what to look for?

Thanks,

It's probably something come a little loose in the dashboard. You need to isolate it's source as best you can. I recommend removing the glove box and see if it changes or disappears first, then tear further into the dash as necessary. Glove box is easy to remove and you can leave it out and drive around like that for a couple days if you need to be sure the rattle has disappeared (remove the glovebox lamp bulb).

To remove the glove box, open it and press down firmly on the back of it until the tabs on the box clear the "hooks" mounted to the dash.

Before you tear into anything, check to make sure the jack is secured tightly.

Someone else on here was fooled by that before.

Good call... I didn't think of that.

Try the the transmission fill tube, sometimes it will vibrate against the air conditioning lines. It sound like a buzz.

That's a good call too.

My truck came from the dealer with a tie-wrap holding it against the heater line coming from the block. I'll bet that's why.

checked the transmission tube, not an issue. I'll have to check the jack, but it would surprise me if it was because it sounds like it is behind the dash. I tried removing the glovebox and shifting into and out of drive a bunch of times while sticking my hand in there trying to feel for the culprit, but no luck. I will keep trying. Please do keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks

Mine does the same exact thing. It never did it until they had to drop the transmission to replace reverse. Actually when I first picked it up it did it all the time at idle. The Tech came out to look at it and found it to be the transmission dipstick vibrating against the A/C condensor lines. He pulled it away and it stopped 95% of it now. It just does it occacionally when I shift into drive or reverse for a split second. I am either going to wrap that tube with some pipe insulation or tie it up out of the way. It must be the torque of the engine at makes it lurch a little and rub the A/C lines or maybe even the floor pan if its routed too close to that.
