Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Rattling noises from engine?

Hi, all.



Got a question about engine noise for you. Yes, this is my first CTD, but I have driven a number of PSDs (I told the guys at my rescue squad that we should get a Cummins, but no avail--they've got about 8 Fords), so I do know they're noiser than the gassers I'm used to.



However, I've noticed that under WOT, my engine makes a 'rattling' noise. Best I can explain it is similar to the noisy valvetrain (or maybe it was pinging... ) in my old '86 Toyota. Can't hear it over the rest of the engine noise unless the windows are up and the radio low.



So, can someone tell me--is this a normal engine noise, or is it something I should get looked at? Truck has about 70k on it, so if it's something that needs repair before it hurts something else (and I run out of warranty), I'd like to know...

Noise

Mine does that when I accelerate hard at highway speed when towing and my fuel filter needs changing, sounds just like valve clatter. bg

Throw some Citain booster in the next tank, see if that don't make a difference. I went through about 6 tanks of fuel last week, each tank was different then the last. Some was quiet, some was loud. I ran out of Amsoil Citain booster on the way down to Fla.
