OK, got sa question being a newbie to the diesel owning world. This morning when I came out to start the truck, I got a quick whiff of raw diesel. I hadn't opened the door or started it yet. I looked under the truck and popped the hood, but couln't smell it anymore. I haven't filled up in about a week, and have about a half tank.

Any Ideas? Is it normal?

A breather or something?

Thanks,

Diesel Smell

Jeff, that's not raw diesel you smell, it's raw power. I too, have smelled that before and I couldn't find any source for it. I think it just might me the way the outside air is on any given day, because it seems that on some days, the smell is stronger than others. But then again, I could be wrong.

Breather bottle....

It has been posted several times that this smell is coming from the crankcase breather bottle. I removed mine and extended the hose with 3/4" heater hose down beside the oil pan.

I smell it too, I believe it is from my breather. When it got really strong it was my fuel line leaking. The harder I run before shutdown the stronger it is, that's why i supect my breather.

Hope I attached those right. I found them on the 12v Drivetrain Forum.

I would suspect that I just need to welcome you to diesel power. They are loud, drool oil and smell good:)

Take a look at your return-line. Mine started leaking about 30k and was liittle more than a smell for quite a while, then it started to puke fuel real bad.

If found in time it will save a real mess.

Thanks guys, I had left my truck in a parking garage last night, and it did not smell this morning. I have the hose to relocate the puke tube/bottle. I'll check the return line this weekend.

Uh, Jeff... ... ... you didn't smell this Sat. night did you????? Just wondering if maybe it was my wifes cooking:D I know it gave you hearburn, aybe it gave you gas too??? :D

Batman, the food was great!!! I even had the opportunity to chew a few of the larger chunks again on the way home. Tasted good then also.

So, Can we put in a request for side-dishes this Saturday:p :--)

oh well, next time. Actually, I've been dog and house sitting this week. Dude, I wish it was your dog. This one I'm sitting has some real issues.....

Awe, come on, I'd be your dog's BEST friend.

The dog I'm watching is one of the most spoiled dogs I have ever seen. Not only that, the owner puts disney animated movies in the vcr for the dog to watch during the day. No kidding.

Well, I have been leaving SpeedVision on for him during the day. I'll turn this dog into a self respecting, belching, private-licking, farting, canine. I heard a really deep belch from him last night. Tonight I'll show the dog how to fart with authority... .

If ANYONE can show him the finer points, you the man:D I just hope he's not one of those dogs that faces away from you too often:eek: :{ Oo. :D

You may also want to check the hood to cowl seal on top of the firewall at the front of the cowl vent. This falls of alot. The cowl vent (at the base of the windshield) is were fresh air is drawn into the cab. If the seal fell off it will suck air from under the hood instead of fresh outside air. A few dabs of rtv will hold it in place securely but you will still be able to remove it if needed. ;)
