I've been tossing the idea back and forth through my head for some time. Cummnzpwr was the one who told me about the silencer ring. In fact he's the one that got me started in all this crazy CTD stuff. He saw I had my CTD listed in my profile and sent me a instant message one night on AOHELL. We talked and talked and talked for like a hour or two that night. The more he kept telling me about stuff the more eager I was to learn more about my CTD.

Anyhow, one thing he told me about was the silencer ring. He explained what it was, and how to remove it. But somewhere in his explination he got me confused. I expected more whistle in the exhaust not in the cab. Anyhow I contemplated reinstalling it, but I hate the idea of the ring coming loose!

How many of you have removed then re-installed your silencer ring? Is this something I really need to worry about or am I just being crazy?

Opinions wanted...

It goes in pretty easily. As long as everything seats as it should, it ain't goin' anywhere. I've removed and re-installed mine several times.

I bought my truck with the ring removed.

After 2 days I couldn't stand the noise anymore and reinstalled the ring. You just have to be carefull.

As long as you didn't bend the retaining ring when you took it out you will be fine.

Make sure the silencer ring is centered in it's hole. Carefully work the retaining ring back into the groove from whence it came. Do this and you shouldn't have a problem. If you lost the retaining ring - you are screwed and will have to find someone on this board who doesn't want theirs. I tried finding one thinking all I had was the silencer ring - no luck - from anywhere.

Ended up the guy who took it out put it back in the groove and just kept the silencer ring out - whew... . that made my day!

got smoke,

If you think you might want to take it back out again, be sure to put the "gap" of the retaining ring at the bottom of the turbo... I did not pay attention to mine when I put it back in and the gap is on the top  I will probably have to pull the turbo if I want to get mine back out :( Oh well, live and learn :D

Jim

PS, I put mine back in after installing the BHAF and the first tow with my wife in the passenger seat, pulled a couple of long hills and she said the piercing whistle was too much for her...

Got smoke, I don't blame you for putting it back in. When I had it out it was fine untill the first tow, alas, drove me nuts. Needless to say it is back in.

Make darn sure you get the ring in there good, I had mine out a long time ago and put it back in, the other day I was thinking man that thing is loud wonder what the deal is, pulled the hose off and the parts were sitting against the impeller nut:--) No damage, luckly.

well I reinstalled it this evening. It seemed kinda loose at first so I got my dad to looking at it with me, and we took it out 2 or 3 times trying to get it right. Finally I think we got it to seat right. It still had a little play in it, so I hope its not to bad.

I'll check it in a day or two make sure its still ok.
