Ok. I finally sold the revolver and am ready to buy a shotgun. An acquaintance has a used 870 with an extra rifled barrel for sale for $300. Is that a good deal?

Depends on how used it is. A brand new 870 Express can be had for around $279. Throw in a rifled barrel and you're looking closer to $400. If the gun is in good condition, especially if it not the Express model (it will say on the side of the receiver), it is a good deal. There is also an Express Magnum (3. 5" shells) that sells for a bit more than the regular Express. The Express, while the bottom of the 870 heap, is still a mighty good gun. If you have need or desire for the rifled barrel, I'd go for it.

I would find out the condition, and then you can make a better decision. What is going to be the primary use, hunting, trap shooting, home defense?

Ahhhh yes. The golden pumps of pumps... the sear of shotguns, the venerable 870. I would say, as long as there isnt any mechanical defects (failure to fire, rack, slide, or otherwise hold a pattern/shoot), I would go with it. I still have my 3 since 1992. Been in the mud, salt water, marshes/swamps, uplands and forests, and they ALL still run strong.

John

Sorry it took me so long to get back here. The gun is supposed to be in good condition, but I think its gone by now. A friend of mine was looking at it as well and I think he went ahead and got it.

I am looking for something that doubles as a home defense gun, shoot the neighbors dogs if they gets into my chickens gun, and maybe to get back into deer hunting in the future kind of gun. :)

I have always liked side by side double 12s, probably not the most practical thing I could buy. :-laf

In your opinions, how does the 870 compare with the Winchester pump & the Mossberg pump?

I'd love to have a home defense, combat shotgun with an extended tube for more shells. Would be great in the trailer while camping in the woods, also. I, usually, carry a 357 but, a good "scatter gun" would sure be nice.

another one to keep an eye on would be a benelli nova, i love mine, i had a buddy that worked the counter at a gun store and did lotsa duck hunting who got sold on the nova by his buddy (i had mine before this so i wasn't swayed) basically it is the glock of shotguns, as they were boating back to the landing his method of cleaning it was to hold it over the side with the slide back and let the water run though it, norm cried BS "you gotta be breaking it down and oiling it once you get home" so dude hands it to him and tells him to keep it till the next outing and don't do anything to it, a couple weeks later they go out and the stream cleaned non oiled put to bed wet nova worked perfect as always. i clean and oil mine just because playing with them is part of the fun, i clean and oil my glock too :-laf
