There has been some confusion about the 06 trucks' ability to display the trouble codes by the old key cycle method. In a recent reply I indicated that I couldn't get the codes from my 06 either.

Here is what I found:

You must hold the key release button down and cycle the key completely off or it won't work. If the odometer is still "alive" you cannot complete the scan.

Cycle the key completely off three times and then leave it on. The codes will display. Mine showed P0111 the first time and then would just indicate "done" for the next two checks (apparently the p0111 code cleared itself).

This is good, as I didn't want to have to buy a scan tool. Hope it can help someone else out too.

Before you assume you can read engine codes that way,do a test. With the key on remove a couple of engine sensors for a few seconds then reconnect. If it works you will see these codes if not ... ... ... ... . it does not work.

I have read codes on mine doing the same thing. This was confirmed when I went to the dealer and he pulled the same code.

I know this thread is old but what is a "key release button"?

Is that something found only on manual transmission trucks or 1 ton trucks?

I don't think my 2006 3/4 ton automatic transmission truck has a key release button.

Thanks.

The key release button is a button right by the ignition that you have to push to get the key to release. The automatic trucks must not have them.

RAH out.
