My baby cut off on me while returning from ny picking up a jeep with a bad trans on u. s. 81 south heading to fla. i swaped places with the jeep(no reverse)and limped into harrisburg pa cummins to have a look at my fuel cutoff sillanoid they pulled it cleaned put it back in and it started right up then they told me i needed a new inj pump(re-man $1495. 99) I choked a little and ask them why they said when they pulled the sillanoid they found "particles"i then told them that she runs and i just want to get back to fla safeley.

they said the trucks ready to go,so i paid them $180. 00 and started heading south about 5 hours later she shut down again!

I popped the hood and noticed the sillanoid was leaking and loose!

i pulled it and removed the plunger and screwed it back in she fired right up!

the next day i called cummins ask them why they did such a poor job and did not replace the sillanoid they said"if i had bought a new pump it would have came with it".

i called cummings of ocala fl they told me the cost of a new sillsnoid is $128. 00! 91 stock

You made the right decission , got out of there just in time , you didn't spend the
$1,500. Wecome to the dog owners training center. You should go to the user control pannel and fill in the info on truck so its easyer to help, need to know the yr,mdl. and that kind of stuff , when you read the 1st post somebody makes it tell you about there trucks and any mods. under there post.

Just simply call Harrisburg Cummins & tell them what you told us about the price in Ocala. Then tell them you're going to contact the attorney general of Pa. and tell them about the attempted price gouging thet tried to inflict on you. If they tried it on you, chances are they've done it to others. Take pride in knowing they didn't gouge you in a non needed repair.

Post your supplier info here or down in the 1st gen forums. As many people that end up looking for those, it would be great to have on hand.

At the High School where I graduated about a thousand years ago, there was the phrase over the auditorium stage that read "Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est".

(edit: Itself knowledge Power Is)

There is a tremendous amount of power on the forums in the form of specific knowledge regarding our trucks. I am still surprised that owners leave the yard with out the tools to address the problem you mentioned. You can figure that the newest first gen is now 12 years old. The fuel solonoid IS a problem, not just from contamination but from just not being wired securely. Replace the slide on connection with an eylet and you will not have that problem later.

I have four CTD trucks and have had some problem with each in regard to the fuel solonoid. My highest miles truck has had numerous small problems over the 500k miles it has worked for me. The only time any of my trucks have been to a dealer was for waranty repair. With one exception. I went off with out tools once and had to have the belt and tensioner replaced. I could have bought four belts and tensioners for the repair bill.

You mention contamination that was found at the solonoid. I have no idea just where it originates but it is not uncommon to find very small metal fragments that are attracted to the magnetic field of the solonoid. Forget about them.

A couple of years ago I did a post asking what others had repaired and got a very good response. You could reference that to see what to expect as the miles roll up.

If You Haven't Already Bought a New Solenoid....

Don't!! The solenoid is a Bosch part. I got one, from a link in this forum, for $31. 00 plus shipping. I got in 3 days. It is the exact part from our pumps. Here's the link:

Hope this helps anyone needing a new one!

Edit - Almost forgot. Here was the original thread:

Hey, James. When you went to high school, wasn't Latin the only language spoken? ;) :-laf :-laf

they also rebuild the ve pumps for around $400. 00

Hey tugboat, would it be wise to go ahead and purchase one of these, im not exactly sure where it goes but im a packrat of having available parts, wires, fuses, etc. . on hand.

Don't know what Tugboat will tell you but I have a spare solonoid along with a belt, a fuel filter, a water pump, some tail and turn light bulbs and cab light bulbs, and fuses. A spare light switch, an extra wiper blade, a length of 3/8 fuel line and some fuel in a jerry can, a few tools, some tape, a fire extinguisher, a chain and binder. On the Alaska run I carried a starter and alternator and LOTS of extra fuel.

Since the 93 was first new, I have used each of those things on the road and was super glad I had them. On most of them, I found out the hard way that I might need them.

i,m thinking of not useing the solenoid at all since there is a mech kill lever on the inj pump.

i,m thinking of running a morce cable and fab a bracket on my e-brake for a cutoff.

that will screw a theifs day right up!

depress the brake shut down, release the brake fire it up!

plus you can go in the store without shutting down, just throw it in park and take the keys with you! :-laf :-laf :-laf

well im gathering this and that for the 12V, plus the truck came with a deezee diamond plate toolbox so that is coming in handy for tools and parts.

Guys, will this Bosch fuel solenoid work on a 2nd gen truck? I have a 94 that has occasional problems starting up because of that.

Thanks!

If you found metal particles on the plunger your ve pump is about to go.....

Take your pump off and have IT rebuilt at your local fuel shop and put it back on..... Tell them that you want all NEW springs and a NEW cam and rollers put in it... . Don't pay anymore than 800. 00 for it... I get mine done for 600. 00 on a special deal I have with my shop...

One other thing... ... . I never go cross country with out having an extra ve pump onboard and the tools to swap it..... It sure beats getting gouged if I encountr a pump failure !
