I found a great link that provides much insight to WHAT the dyno measures...
http://www.vettenet.org/torquehp.html

When you get there, do a word search for PLANET, and read that paragraph... .

This tech stuff is fun!

Shawn is absolutely correct. You can not measure horse power. It is calculated. And you need torque and RPM to calculate it.

Any chance of getting the graphs from the runs?

A device could produce one heck of a peak reading, but not be useful.

I hope someone helped you out with all the cost of the parts.

And it looks like TST and others need to publish some graphs like vanAken.

Shawn,Have you ever had you truck dynoed. I have been building high hp motors for years, and have never seen a chassis dyno that needs a tach read to give you hp. Dont believe me,call for your self.

HVAC,thanks for your in put. Keep BOMBING HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sportbike , did you try the VA with the PM2 and injectors whether its the 275 or the DDIII ?? i remember one person did it but no dyno numbers , in my opinion the timing increase provided by the VA will amplify the fueling increase of the magic boxes ... by the way , did anyone read DR. P's latest propaganda smear advertisement in the newest issue of the TDR ??? if its true . he'll give me a $1000 discount towards his tweaked pump , will i have to give him my parts ??? #ad

also for those still wanting the VA cheap look in the classified section under business potential , better than the latest deal ...

Mopar,I didnt test both boxes. I only have so much money to play with. But I would be very interested in the dyno results.

KEEP ON BOMBING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sportbike;

I don't mean to get you too concerned about this, again I think we all appreciate your work.

The reason you have never had to give RPM to get HP numbers, is because it is a "mass acceleration" type of dyno. This type of dyno uses HP=Force X Velocity. Velocity is measured directly as acceleration, and Force= Mass X Acceleration.
Basically, using a known drum resistance, it's acceleration is measured. And using this method, you will have to READ the tach to back calculate the torque.

While this is the EASIEST method of dyno, it is not a TRUE dyno. A TRUE dyno would have to dynamically alter the resistance of the rollers throughout the RPM range, give a stone cold true torque reading. I believe that the vehicle engineering facilities use these types of dynos - but they are expensive!!!

As you can see, the acceleration method is a slightly convuluted method of determining real horsepower and torque.

Well, I'm sorry I've beat this one to death, but I just love the technical side of the measurements.
And no, my truck is not HP savvy enough to bother running a dyno #ad

I am only offering the physics explanation for the dyno measurement techniques because perhaps we can all learn something from each other.....

Shawn
