Horse track that is...

We went to Lone Star park this weekend since my Mother-in-laws horse was running. Her horse (Six Little Injuns) is ranked either #2 or #3 in the US for the 840 yard race. This horse took first place 7 times in a row, followed by 2 second place wins, and another first place win before this race during this years season.

About 200 yards out of the gate, the jocky pulls the horse out of the race and gets off. The horse broke his leg ( I think it was the cannon bone?) and they had to put the horse down. This was a big blow!! Imagine going from excited race horse owner to loosing your best horse in 5 minutes or less. She bought the horse when he was 2, and had him for about 4 years.

We were pretty bummed

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Especially to a good horse, they're hard to come by. A year ago last week we had to put down a mare that had been in the family 23 years. She was coming on 37 years old, so it was her time, doesn't sound like it was time for your horse. My condolences. Tim

Sorry to hear this. Your mother in law lost not only a friend but also an investment in time and money. A horse named Magic Weisner beat long odds to come in second in the Preakness. The owner was then offered a good deal of money, maybe 100k or so but turned down the offer. Not long after, the horse was diagnosed with WNV but is recovering. The rest of this season was a bust however.

If you look at this picture, you can see the cannonbone below the knee and why the horse was put down.
