So I was sitting in bed, watching my Sunday morning shows on Spike, and I see this commercial for Flowmaster giving you that muscle car sound, and I got to thinking (big mistake at 11 AM). My 97 gasser had a great exhaust system on it and sounded phenominal. So here's the question: Can you install an exhaust system that will give you that nice deep rumble, like a muscle car? Before I get flamed, I love my diesel and wouldn't ever trade it for a gasser again... . I just like the sound of the gassers. Maybe it's cause I'm a newbie diesel owner, but I'm still not quite used the diesel exhaust sound yet. Thanks for the answers and input.

I like muscle car noise as much as any red-blooded American, but I've heard muscle-diesel noise that will definately make your sticker peckout.

I think the reason we love muscle car sound is cause we recognize it as power & high performance. Its no different with a perfrmance diesel.

One of my buddies has a Duramax... we always make fun of him cause it sounds like a big block chevy instead of a real diesel like the Cummins.

Hey Fred,

My Chevy 6. 5 TD sounds a lot like a 383 mopar since I installed a 4" exhaust system with a straight-thru muffler (fromJardine). The reason your Dodge sounds different is that it's an inline 6 cylinder. The best you can hope for in the auditory department is that it may sound like a really mean plymouth Duster with a Cherry bomb muffler! I've never been a big fan of the inline 6 cylinder sound but the more I hear that Cummins settle down and put all that torque to work pulling my trailer the better I like it. :)

Thanks for the answers guys. My mom had a 79 Plymouth Volare Duster, Stoops, so I don't think I want to revisit that memory. I'm pretty sure I want to get dual exhaust, even if it doesn't give me that "muscle" sound... . I really miss the look I had on my 97 gasser..... that one was 3" through a freeflow cat, through a Cherry Bomb glasspack to an Imco freeflow muffler back to 4" Magnaflow resonator tips, which came out on each side, angled like the stock pipe was.

Stoops; For the 52 Chevy; Need I say "Cummins BT4, or a ISB 4"? Now I've had a 225 Slant Six and my Cummins Sounds 1,000% Better!! :D A Slant Six at it's very best sounds like a Bee in a Tin Can. I do agree that a Duramax sounds alot like a Big Block Pontiac, there is nothing wrong with the Cummins Sound

I installed a aeroturbine muffler on mine (straight stacks before) and it gave it a much deeper tone not quite a v8 with glasspacks but close. bought it off e bay for 139. 00

I installed the MBRP 4" Stainless with their muffler and love the bark I get. I don't get any interior resonance and when you're cruising it puts out out a nice deep drone. What I like is when I get on it, the truck almost sounds like a straight through exhaust. It's a beautiful thing. Throw in the Turbo whine and oh..... hang on... I need a moment alone.....

Ok, now that I've read through a few post I see what your getting at. When I first got into the diesel thing, about 2 years ago. I wanted a Superduty and I wanted mine to sound just like my buddy Sid's. His SD sounds like an Apache Helicopter flying low. When it fires up it rumbles for a moment or two like a Big Block Chevy, then the "turbo" whine takes over. It sounds the same when he leaves the light, gets everyones attention. I've tried to get my "Cummins Powered" Dodge to sounds this good, but gave up. I've had three different mufflers ( Straight-Pipe/ Donaldson/ MBRB / and I am back to the stock because about as mean as I can get my truck to sound is like a UPS truck, or 4. 0L Inline Six from a Jeep Cherokee. My friend said when my truck had the MBRP on it, it reminded him of a 1998-1999 BMW M3 with a mild exhaust system, not sure if that is a compliment or not.
