I'm looking to buy some air bags for a 91 d250 4x4. How do they mount them on these trucks any pics(have home made 5th wheel mount in the way) and what brand does every boddy like THANKS

Firestone Ride Rite and AirLift are the major brands. On your SRW they normally mount outside the frame so your hitch shouldn't be in the way. A manual fill kit will run around $225 from Whitney.

I've had air bags on five of my trucks and really the brand isn't a issue, both Firestone and Air Lift offer great products that resemble each other very close. The real issues is the control, you need to decide what arrangement you are going to install to control the air bags. In my opinion, air bags would be worthless unless you installed an on-board air supply system. That is the true beauty of air bags, the control you have of them over the ride , terrain, and load. Also, air bags weather on your truck or on the big rigs will normally lose air. Yes it is important to have a sound supply and air line system, but the bags them selves are homogeneous and will over time lose air. Hence the importance of the on-board air supply system. They will make any truck ride better, but you need a sound system and for the ultimate in ride comfort, you will need to remove the over-load springs from the rear leaf springs. Good luck.

I have Air Lift bags on my truck, love em. As was said, I originally had no onboad air supply or controller, they were almost useless that way, now I can see the pressure on a guage, and add or subtract air while driving to suit the road and load.

I will measure the distance between the frame and wheel to see if there is enough clearance. My ball mount goes to the out side of the frame that is what is worring me about mounting locations. I would still like to see some pics of the upper mount to see if it is going to clear . THANKS for all the info already:D

Here is a picture of my air bag setup... ... hope it helps.

For clearity... this is a shot of the truck while I am working on it, the air bags are empty and the truck is up on the lift with the rear axle hanging. The spacer under the air bag is to compensate for the lift, you may or may not need one.

Here's a source: Stempf 800-328-0240.

stempf.com

These guys have all sorts of chassis parts and tools. Part # 57215, $219. 95, fits your truck, handles up to 5000lbs. Check their web site for other stuff. They also have the spring spacers that 2WDs need to level the sagged left front spring.

Check out Timbrens. They act similar to air bags but don't need adjustment. I know a lot of guys have them on the newer trucks. Real easy to install and cheaper than air bags. I really like mine.

Stempf has Timbrens as well, but they will not work the way air bags do. $132 for typical applications. I'm going with airbags.

These are Air Lift bags, i have had them on this truck for over the 6-7 years, before that they were on another truck, talk about getting your moneys worth?

I have removed the overload spring pack and it's separator, I wanted a better ride and also like the extra room with them gone. Also I modified the mount.

Anyone know why Air Lift has quit making their Road Tamer air bags for 2006 and newer Dodge trucks? When I talked to them, they couldn't give me a reason except that it might have to do with the newer frame.

I'm just finishing the installation on my truck using Airlift bags and compressor. The compressor kit is about $110 from Whitney and currently carries a $25 rebate when bought with the spring kit. You also get a lifeime warrnaty on the bag when a compressor kit is installed with the. My truck also is getting a homemade gooseneck hitch which does clear the air springs.

I will say the the airbag install has been interesting. I've done these things before, but this one is more of a challenge than others.

Ride quality before and after on a 1st gen

I have decided to buy the Firestone air bags for my 93' W250 4x4. I am hoping these bags will help cushion the bounce I get from towing my 23ft 5th wheel travel trailer. Anyone else on here use their air bags to help with towing a trailer? I realize that the rear leaf spring suspension on 1st gens are very stiff and all bouncing/bumps in the road are amplified.

This was not mentioned in the topic, if they come with quick connect air lines, and the majority does, on the air fitting that screws into the top you might develope/have a air leak because they make them swivel. mine did and to solve the problem was to use a brass fitting with compression type connecters to the plastic lines. I bought mine from Genoe's, which are Pacbrake, they have a little better construction to them, than some of the others. They all install about the same.

If these bags are rated for anything more than 2000 lbs; I don't see why one could'nt remove one or two rear leafs to make it ride softer and still have more than enough load capacity.
