George25,

I also like to change my rear diff. fluid at 15,000 miles. Not sure about the front. I have had great difficulty finding a synthetic 75W-140 (Other than DC dealer who will order it for me at $19 per pint!). Did you find it in quarts and what supplier did you use? Thanks for the info!

Flyboy61:

As best that I could find out Mobile does not package Mobile1 80W140 in quart containers. I contacted a distributor in this area and found that it was available in 5 gallon containers for what works out to be about $5. 50 per quart shipped to my door. This is a good price if one intends to change each 15,000 miles or so.

Call McPherson Oil at (205) 274-2179 and they can no doubt put you in touch with a distributor in your area. Otherwise, I think you may be able to locate a distributor by going to the Mobile Oil Web Page.

I agree the a synthetic 75w/80w-140 is difficult to find in quarts, other than Amsoil. The 5 gallon bucket is great idea cost wise, but the problem I see is that the oil will sit around for a year or more before you use the rest of it. This will give the oil time to collect moisture.

FYI Another 75w-140 synthetic to consider, only available in 5 gallon buckets is Shell Spirax S. The Shell is approved by the Dana Corp. and the Mobil is not, not that this really matters, but the price per bucket in my area was $20 less, or $1 less per quart.

Question for you, are you talking about the Mobilube SHC symthetic oil? The Mobil 1 I thought only came in 75w90. I guess it doesn't matter, the difference is the Mobil 1 has a LS additive the Mobilube doesn't. Just curious.

My 99,3500 carries a camper that brings the GVW up to about 11,000 pounds (the max) about 2/3 of the time. The Owners Manual recommends a change to 80W140 synthetic fluid in the rear axle. I have done this (Mobile1 75W140 synthetic). My question is: should I also change this fluid each 15,000 miles???

I changed the front axle fluid to Mobile1 80W90 synthetic but very seldom use the 4 wheel drive. Should this fluid be changed at 15,000 miles?

I will appreciate any wisdom that members have to offer.

I would change both differentials at the same time. The reason being, you have a central axle disconnect in your front axle. this means that one axle shaft is always connected to the differential. That translates into motion in the differential all of the time. So the miles you put on the rear are the same as the front. Don't get this confused with the front axle being driven. You may not have power applied to the front all the time but it still spins.
Okay, okay. The rear will have more signs of being worn more than the front due to the duration of power and the amount of power applied. But really, they will be somewhat close in terms of oil life. Hope this helps.
