My '95 2500 w/ 5 speed manual transmission, geared lower than snake **** with 4.10s and I'm thinking of going 3.73s just to make the daily driver aspect a little better. Before I go off and spend the money to re-grear I want to make sure I identified it right.
The 4.10 to 1 axle is a mixed blessing. My 1996 came with 3.54 axles, fortunately. Towing my travel trailer, I can usually get 16 mpg without trying hard, at a constan t 62 mph. My wife can do better, but she uses the cruise control.
At work many years ago, the powers-that-was asked me to spec out a one ton CTD 4x4 for heavy use and towing. Then they would order one taking my "suggestions" into account. The equipment trailer it would pull had been designed in 1989 to be no wider than a Suburban. I made up a list that came out in tradesman trim. I emphasized, "whatever you don't get it with duals and 4:10 axles." Yes, it came with duals and 4:10s. We were never able to break 11 mpg. There were time in rough country when the 4:10 ratio came in handy, as well as a few times when we had to dislodge reluctant objects. It was an excellent truck and it is still in use almost 20 years later at a different office.
I can average around 15mpg if I keep my foot out of it! I've gotten just over 20mpg with load in bed on interstate. Got a little better going south on 95 through Georgia. As @AH64ID mentions, the cost to re-gear will be a never break even on fuel savings. But hey, you truck and your money.
Thank you guys for weighing in. I'm going to hold off for now but i did mark "dana 80" on there so I know for later. I'm going to keep driving as is for the year and see if i get used to the low gearing in traffic. Again, thank ya'll for the information.
In the old 4 speed /410 days we never used low gear except to pull hard etc etc normal driving always started in second. The 351 Cleveland Ford v8 s were topped out at 60 mph in fourth gear. Twin 20 gallon tanks gas was cheap
