I have been noticing a leak coming from my right rear Brake Housing.....

I read a couple of different things on here where people were replacing the axle seals.

I replaced mine and then cleaned the enitre area so I could watch to see if it stopped leaking... ...

Well it is still leaking, BUT it doesnt seem to be coming from the area of the seal but more from the area of wear the Drum brake is pressed together with the outer axle housing... .

Is This Possible?????????

James,

There is a lip on the inside of the housing that acts as a slinger to keep the oil off the brakes. I'm pretty sure that you are still having a leak at the axle seal. This is where the speedy sleeves come in to play. I replaced the seal and had it start leaking again as soon as I ran the truck. The speedy sleeves are available at bearing supply houses as well as some auto parts. You need to mic the housing to be sure you get the right size sleeve. They drive on, you will need to scrounge up something to use for that. There also is a sealant that is used, darn if I can remember what it is called though.

If you Are Correct. . Then why isn't the oil coming out the back of the dust shield or from between the shield and the Drum?

When I took it a part last weekend There was no signs of Gear Oil inside the Drum or on any of the Brake system inside the Drum.

The oil seems to be coming from between the Drum and Outer Axle housing.....

I am no expert mechanic by any means... . SO.....

If you think the Axle seal is still the problem let me know.

Thanks

There is a cone, which directs the oil away from the brake shoes. I had the same problem on my 93, and I only had the cone on one side (bought the truck used) and fortunately it was that side that had the leak. I even pressed out the studs and seperated the hub from the drum looking for the leak, and it turned out to be the seal after all. Don't forget to replace your axle nuts when you do this. I know its expensive, but you might as well do everything while you have it apart.

Can I suggest you drive it a while longer... ... if you had any oil spill out when you pulled the thing apart a while back you may well simply have "excess" oil that is in the deflection plate. In my case, I thought I had a seal leaking two times. The dealer replaced the seals since they had done brake work.

The third time I just sprayed it with degreaser, washed it down and drove it...

After a couple weeks or so, the staining stopped and dried up. No problem since.

If that don't work, by all means get the the speedy sleeve. .
