I was checking out my rear axle earlier and saw some sealant around the cover. What sort of sealant/gasket came stock on these trucks? I'm wondering if the fluid has been changed recently. Secondly, I'm planning on changing the fluid in it this weekend maybe. What should I use for a gasket? Sealant, pre-formed gasket, etc?

Thanks,

At the risk of being blunt, do a search. You will find a lot of interesting information. I always spend time searching because it helps me ask good questions and saves others a lot of typing.

That said, I use the ultra copper sealant, No gasket, Amsoil 75-90, Kendall LS additive.

Do the search and you will find other things to inspect when you have it open for the fluid change.

Reb,

I don't know what sealant came from the factory, other than to say it's some kind of silicone. You can tell the first time you change a new truck's fluid.

The factory recommends using silicone sealant as a gasket. I don't think anyone makes a real gasket for the differential cover, except for the o-ring that comes with a Mag-Hytec.

I have used high-temp silicone as well as the regular stuff. They both seem to work fine.

Once I tried Hylomar (brand name) sealant because it claimed to be made for differential covers, and also claimed to be reusable. It leaked. I changed the oil prematurely that time, and used silicone sealant.

Just follow the instructions that come with the silicone. Don't use too much or it will ooze into the axle housing. I doubt that it would hurt anything, but it certainly doesn't help either. A bead that's about 1/8" diameter has worked for me.

Valco makes a tube squeezer gizmo that will prevent cramps from trying to get that viscous mess through that 1/8" hole. Call them and order a "Tube Grip. " Their data:

Valco Cincinnati

411 Circle Freeway Drive

Cincinnati, OH 45246

Phone: 513-874-6550

(Orders): 800-788-3865

You should also get a "Jay's EZ Funnel" from Geno's Garage. It will make filling the differential waaaaay easier than pouring from the bottle.

Good luck.

Loren
