The factory nylock with stake pin is junk. Check out my parts list in the first gen upgrades. Just my opinion fellas, the old system is better and you can positively set the preload on the timkens. Tim

on my truck i am in the process of switching from the nylon lock nuts to the same nuts and lock washer as the front axle has the seem to thread on fien and hopefully should work well my truclk is a one ton single rear wheel with the heavier 4500lb front axle and 12x3" rear brakes stock . any opinions on this move? the nuts were expensive liek $25 bucks each or something. also any tips on benting the lock tab outward on the front axles? your supposed to bend one tab inward over inner nut, and on the tab opposite of it, you bend the tab outward over the outer lock nut.

probelem is the nuts are recessed in pretty good and the lock washer is pretty thick so bending one inward is easy but bending one outward is a real treat ... any body have any tips or help with that?

thanks

Deo

ps when i took apart my rear brakes there wasn't a nylon lock nut "stake"... ha. only the nylon lock nut and nothing else so thats bad ha...

lock tab

:) Hey buddy, the lock tab has a small tab on the inside diameter of the washer. This tab goes in the groove in the tube and the tabs that go around the washer are pointed slightly out, so they are easy to bend by just using a big screwdriver and prying on the inside of the hub. I am not sure why you are bending a tab forward and then one the other way. Does it have a tab on the inside of the diameter? The other system is like the front axle only with a washer that has a number of holes in it to line up with a nut that has a small dowell in it to lock it all together. Eliminates the consumable tab washer. I've posted the price of these parts and they are very resaonable. It is common for the stake pin to be gone on the nylock and also common for it to be used over and over. Whatever floats your boat, I always say. Good luck. Tim

naw you mis understood me. . yes the washer has a groove in the inside that stays in the spindle. My washer was not the type with holes in it it was the flat style with square tabs all around the outside of it with the normal inside tab that slides in the spindle groove. My factory service manual tells you to bend one of the square outside washer tabs over the inside lock nut and one of the tabs opposite of the one you already bend over the outer lock nut. The washer is pretty thick and you can not pre bend it outward at all(only inward) as when you set the outerlock nut and turn it the nut edges rub the entire lock washer so that wont work . the washer is pretty thick and there is no way you can bend it with just a screwdriver . The way i had to bend it was with a flat chisel teh inner nut is easy to bend a tab over this way but when you try to secure the outer lock nut with a lock tab its a *****.

like i said my truck had the square tabs style lock washer and two nuts on the front and a nylock on the rear stock. None of teh parts stores nera me could do any thiung with the dana # for the lock nut style that was posted on the tdr forums... . so i looked at he front and back spoindels and both have the same thread and diameter, so i got the same style nuts and washer for the rears that the front uses stock...

my two quetsions were has anyone else used the front style on the rear also? and any tips on how the easily secure the outerlock nut with the benable sqare tab style lock washer that my truck had on it stock ? etc...

thanks

axle nut

:) Oh, I see what you are talking about now. There is no reason to bend the washer forward over the inside nut for if you bend it over the outside nut, it cannot backoff because of the inside tab in the groove. If you check the tech support for the first gen, I've listed a company and part number for the lock tab with the square tabs surrounding the washer. The air frieght would be cheap to use this washer. It really does work good. They have a 800 number to call. Is your concern that the inner nut will proceed to get tighter and tighter as you drive? On the differential you need not worry about that if you set the preload and use the two nuts and lock tab. Most all bigger trucks use this system with no ill effects. I hope I this helps. Good luck. Tim

Hey, I just converted to the spicer 2 nut, and mine were 2 1/2". I had the 2 9/16" socket, but it was sloppy. 2. 5", nice.

I reach down in there with a slide hammer iith the lil hook thingie & pull the washer tward me once its bent a lil a prybar against the ID of the hub & the washer will flaten it against the nut dont get too caried away with getting the washer bent way down against the nut as it will hold it with verry lil bend to it & if you realy lay the tab over its hard to get up off the nut next time

take care
