I have to do rear axle seals on my 3500 2WD dually this weekend and was wondering if there is any special tools that I will need. I did a search and found some things about a 2 9/16 socket but they were all 4x4. Is it the same differential? Thanks
The nut retaining the bearings is a 2 9/16. It is held in place by a couple little parts that "lock" it to the housing. This is a weakness in the Dana 70/80 rears axle outer ends. I recommend a Quad 4x4 kit to upgrade the retaining system. If the stock clips get loose they can wreck your day.
Can anyone tell me more about this oil bath seal? Is it a seal like some Fords use where the rotating parts of the seal are within the seal and don't actually spin on the axle spindle? Also does anyone have a part number other than Quad 4x4 for this seal?
Are you sure it's 2 9/16 on the hub nut socket? I did my rear seal in March and it needed a 2 1/2 hub nut socket. I have the Dana 80, maybe mines different.
