For the rear brake adjust, does the star wheel turn down on both sides?

It does on mine. I adjust them about every 10 days, or 2000 miles. I can't believe they don't adjust worth a flip.

Uhhhh... when I'm underneath the truck and adjusting through the inspection holes,I'm turning the wheel down. If you have the drum off and you're starring at the brake assembly, then yes,it goes up then.

A couple of months ago I dissasembled the brake adjusters to see what's up. The factory doesn't do anything to make them unscrew easily. The threads were starting to get covered in rust, which doesn't let them do their thing at all! I cleaned them up and coated anti-seize on the threads and end caps, and so far I don't have to go in to re-adjust the brakes anywhere near as often as I used to.

Good idea, Mike. Mine act like they are not self adjusting right now.

I thought mine were also, but when I got under the truck and tried, I found out mine were severely out of adjustment. Try adjusting yours to see. They may be working fine but I think you'll find they are out of adjustment.

Think I remember reading that you should bring them up for slight drag then back off a few clicks. Someone correct me if I am wrong, I need to do mine also.

Umm. . Looked under my BIL's 97' last night... Where are the inspection holes?

I'm familiar with adjusting rear drums, but I've always taken em off. If I could adjust them without doing that... . Wow.

Deezal,

I take it yours is a '97? If you're under the truck looking at the backing plates, you'll see four oval shaped black rubber plugs just below where the axle tube attaches to the backing plate. Pull the plugs and you'll see the adjusting wheel. Have the rear of the truck jacked up while you adjust them. The adjusting wheel will only turn one way.

After you tighten the brakes up you have to disengae the self adjuster to back off 2 or 3 clicks. To do this put a small blade screw driverin beside the star wheel and push the adjusting lever away from the star wheel. If you don't do this you will leave them to tight.
