 Okay guys i need some expert advice, when i take off from the house here and just barely touch the brakes either the back is catching or the front not sure but did notice while coming back from fishing a dirt road that is pretty steep from the top to the bottom that i could smell brakes and have never had this happen before i was wondering if maybe i need to set the back brakes out, the only thing is which way do i turn the adjuster, up or down and how many clicks.

To date: front pads replaced @ 39000miles(stock pads), at 46000miles and recently at 87000miles but the backs are still holding up, the truck was inspected in Dec of 2003 and they said the backs were fine.

Maybe set back brakes out or not, thats the question, thanks again. I must say that when taking off the brakes seem very touchy for some reason (catching really quick with light pedal) hope that clarifies that some. .

I'm not sure what you're saying. If the rears are grabbing, check for leaking seals. Down on the brake spoon tightens them. Craig

It feels like the brakes are grabby when you first start out using the pedal(similar feeling if your truck sets over nite and its raining)as i have heard some say by reading other posts. I have no leaking seals anywhere that i can see im sure if they were there would be evidence of seepage.

C Shomer its one of those things thats hard to describe and put into words im sure you have been there before. What would you recommend as to how many clicks downward i need to go on the adjusters?

Thanks for the reply Oo.

i found two things that make the rear brakes grabby. when its damp or rainy, i blow mine out every time it ssarts this ,you should see the dust that comes out of there.

I hope I can tell you this so you can understand it. The Star Wheel will only trun one way and that's up. The auto. adjuster will not let it back-off. So turn the Star Wheel until you get a heavy drag on the brake drum. Then take a screw driver and stick it along side of the Star Wheel it will stop against the auto adjuster. Push it back another 3/16 inch and turn the Star Wheel back 5 to 7 clicks. Make sure the wheel turns with no brake drag.

Wyatt:

I'm new here to this board but had been dealing with the same problem on my 98. Do one thing and do it now before any adjusting -- pull the drums off and look. Mine had done the same thing. I just let off the rear adjusters (you have to hold the tensioner away from the ratchet wheel to turn) and it went away. Months later when swapping out to bigger wheel cylinders found out why. Oil all over the inside of the drums and shoes. The shoes had even started to break apart. Important point was that there was no external signs of leakage! You have to look to know. If not you could be miles from home trying to patch it together. Hope this helps. For me a new axle seal and wheel cylinder and it works great.
