What is the correct procedure, Haynes manual (I know... . need a service manual) says to adjust till they drag a bit then back them off slightly... . this is probably an old subject.
I just jack the rear and spin a tire while turning the star wheel, it only turns one way. Once you feel/hear the first sign of a slight drag stop, you're done. The first time you use the brakes the slight drag will disappear. If your self adjustors have been working correctly one click may be all you get before the drag starts.
In a perfect world the rear brakes will stay adjusted during normal use as long as you set your parking brake when you park. However, alot of things can go wrong in a dirty hot environment like rear drum brakes. Iflmen's routine is standard procedure. But it is a good idea to get into the habit of setting that park brake.
As for the rear disc brakes. I have not torn into one yet. But if they are like many other systems on the road, adjustment will compensate for wear. I question how often to adjust because a park brake of this design should have very little wear. Unless your driving around with the park brake set.
the rear brake system on these trucks was not designed to adjust with the e-brake. it takes the rolling motion & the shoe to drum contact to get the adjuster lever to raise and grab another tooth on the star wheel----Sam
The little drum setup is how many vehicles use an emergency brake setup with disc. It is more expensive to mfg and a pain to do a brakejob on because now you have BOTH a DRUM and a DISC set to screw with. Man the brake shops love these, they can resurface more stuff... . and charge more. The only good thing is that these shoes hardly ever get any wear.
