Recently on another thread I lamented over my rear brakes causing the rear end to hop after installation of new aluminum wheels, it went like this;
>Add new (wider 8") wheels... rear brakes appear to be causing the rear axle to hop. Oo.
>2 seperate shops check the rear brakes and turn drums (thinking drums were warped... because they were)
>still hopping around Oo.
>Replaced 54,000 mile Michelin tires that had been on the OEM 6. 5" wheels (thinking tires were worn to the 6. 5" wheel profile)
>replace rear drums
>have 3rd shop install new pads and turn the new drums (they actually were warped)
>checked EVERYTHING under the truck>>>nada, still bouncing. Oo.
>Tolerated for 2,000 miles.
SOLVED!!!!!
The new wheels are warped. Had the truck on an axle lift hoist, put it in gear and "behold" the wheels are warped and the run-out on the tire wheel assembly is horrible. At least 2 of the 4 aluminun wheels are warped... BRAND NEW!!
The tire shop that sold them to me have ordered 4 more as replacements,... no charge. These are high dollar, name brand wheels! Apparently the weight of the front end hides the problem and it showed itself on the rear axle when the brakes were applied.
The moral of the story is that new don't mean right. It should have been obvious, but who would have figured new alumium wheels would be this bad. At the time of this writting the mfg and dealer are responding well, and that is a pleasant surprise.
