After 2 weeks in the shop, the front brake problem my truck was having, has been remedied as of late yesterday. The technician told me he adjusted the rear brakes as well. I put the truck on the highway today and within a few miles I could smell brakes burning. Oops! After stopping, there was much smoke coming from the right rear brake. A bit too tight I'd say! I had the truck towed home but the brakes are so tight, it is like trying to drive with the parking brake fully set. So at this point, my truck is not drivable. My understanding is, the brake adjustment wheel will only turn in one direction, tighter. I need looser not tighter. Can anyone tell me how to back the rear drum brakes off so I can drive the truck? Your help is appreciated.

You should be able to take screwdriver (small to med) and push the tab that keeps the brake adjuster from turning back ( Many years ago I used to this with non adjusting brakes)away from the star wheel. Then back off the brakes off with another screwdriver or brake adjusting tool.

Thanks Bill, I've removed the rubber plugs and looked at the star adjusting wheel using a flashlight to assist but I do not see anything contacting the adjusting wheel. I did see what appears to be a small line above and behind the wheel but a little pressure on it with a screwdriver causes it to flex away very easily and I don't believe that has anything to do with locking the rotation of the adjusting wheel. Do you know if the locking lever is at the bottom of the adjusting wheel or at the top? Thanks for your help.

it is at the top and yes it will push away easily then you can rotate the star wheel with another screw driver while holding the catch with the other.
