2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Rear Brake Locking Up

The right rear brake is locking up. I pulled the drum and it doesn't look like anything is wrong, nothing broken, but a little sign of oil, nothing dripping down the tire. The truck has 96,000 miles and a 6000 lb. gvw rear axle. I was going ahead and put on new brake shoes and replace the seals since it will be all apart anyway. Is there any trick in replacing the rear axle seals? I was skimmig through the treads and learned about larger brake cyclinders. Could this be the problem and should I replace the stock ones with the larger cyclinders?

Axle seals

In my experiences, it is probably an axle seal... mine is doing it again also. An axle seal leak, all be it a small one will cause lock up on one wheel.

I agree with the axle seal. Mine needed a left side around 115,000. Once that heavy oil gets in the pad it will drag and stick.

Simon; I hope you have figured out your brake problem by now but just in case you havnt I will relate my trials to you, first do check the seals and pads if the problem continues see how bad the fluid is contaminated in the master cyl if pukey mixture clean it out then replace with new fluid . If it is still locking up it probably is the abs valve up by the rear axle housing if it is the abs try to find one at napa ,dodge will hit you for abouy 250$ compared to less than 50 $ elsewhere. hope you have it fixed .

I know this might sound silly, but make sure the correct shoes are on the truck. 1 large and 1 small shoe. The reason I tell you this, I have a friend that changed his shoes and accidentally put both large on one side and both small on the other, and therefore he created the same condition as you.



He switched them around and the problem went away.
