rear brake upgrade?

i have heard about uprading the rear cylinders to 1 ton parts. is this specialy made up parts to complete this upgrade or can i just go to a parts store & get the 1 ton parts & do the swap. if so does anyone have the part #'s & hints as to set any kin of break upgrade to perform better. thanks

Regular old off the shelf cylinders for the 3500, straight swap.



Keep the rears adjusted and you will have good brakes. I am going to do the rear disc conversion from EGR in a month or two.

thanks jtwcummins, i would also like to do the rear disc conversion, but have had so many other expences on the truck this year, rear axle housing, apps, stuck truck (look at pulled out a hummer) that the disc is not an option right now, but do us all a favor & post back after the conversion to give us a review. thanks

Your 99 2500 Ram already has the same size wheel cylinders as a 3500 which are 1 1/16" or 1. 0625" . Check this link and it will show you alot of brake info.

Now you can go to a 1 1/8" or 1. 125" rear wheel cylinder and you will notice a big difference in stopping power. I changed my rear wheel cylinders to 1 1/8" and I highly recommend this upgrade for use with stock type brake lining. It is amazing what increasing wheel cylinders by 1/16" will do.



As I know of there are two places you can get the 1 1/8" wheel cylinders for your truck.

I bought 1 1/8" wheel cylinders from EGR Brakes and they fit and perform great.

I have not used the NAPA 1 1/8" wheel cylinders so I can't say good or bad about them, but I have had good experiences with other NAPA parts.



There is also one other option but it is more costly, I have not tried it but it will give you something to think about. EGR brakes offers Carbon Kelvar Rear Brakes Shoes @ $179. 00 and they told me not to increase the wheel cylinder size with these Brake shoes because of the higher coefficent of friction of Carbon Kelvar.



Also, whatever wheel cylinders or Brake Shoes you use adjust the rear brakes manually at oil changes and your truck will stop better and your front brakes will last longer.

thanks for all the responces, last we changed the front pads that were badly crystalized, turned the rotors, found two rocks in caliper bucket, the rear drums were so bad it took six turns on the lathe before it started turning all the way round. put in new cylinders, blead the brakes & now she finaly stops. thanks again>

does any body actually have the egr rear shoes? ?I plan on the rear disk conversion but not for a few months yet. but i need better brakes now. Chainsaw

I have the EGR brake shoes and the larger cylinders on my truck. Nothing was mentioned to me about problems doing both at the same time when I bought them. I would not buy the shoes again. They are very grabby, especially after the truck has sat for awhile. I think the larger cylinders with regular shoes is the way to go.



I am also thinking about going to disks. I will probably get the TSM kit when the finances will allow it.

I got the Raymold ones from EGR. I never actually measured them, so I couldn't tell you for sure.

Is the 1 1/8" wheel cylinder upgrade also applicable for a 2001? If so, has anyone used the NAPA cylinders listed above? I might have to give this a try, any improvement over what the back brakes do right now would be worth it.

I have napas in my 90. work great. I did mine 3 years ago so I cant help with the part# and as far as this working on the 01 some one else will have to let you know.
