Here's a tip for anyone in the market for a new bumper. I got rear ended by an uninsured driver. Fortunatly it only got the bumper, no body damage. My insurance estimate was about $420. The replacement bumper with tax is a little less than $400. I went to a local body shop and had a chat with the owner and found out he bought 35 takeoffs from the local Dodge dealer. The dealer replaces the bumpers on state purchased trucks and sells the takeoffs to the bodyshop. I made a cash deal for about half the insurance estimate and bolted it on myself. The only tricky part to bolting it on is the nuts are an odd size, 18mm I think, I used a 11/16 six point but it was a little loose, took me about 30 minutes. The bumper is perfect. Look aroud for takeoffs, it can save you $$

Tom W,

Do you think they would ship one to Maryland. I had just about the same thing happen to me, except the bumper was pushed in enough to tweak the drivers rear quarter. I picked up a serviceable but no where near new bumper from a local junkyard for $75. 00. Have been running that until I can figure out what I want to do regarding a replacement.

Thanks,

Dave, they would probably ship one but the shipping and HANDLING charges would be too much. It would have to be crated, etc, and would end upping costing more. Your best bet is to find out what the dealers do with takeoffs, they all have them occasionally.

Another thing, if you replace your wimpy bumper with a pipe one you can usually sell the stock piece to a body shop.

I took an old piece of a heavy duty truck frame , cut it to the shape i wanted, welded the bolt holes up, added a pintle/ball hitch, mounted an 8000# ramsey worm drive winch (to pull stuff on my trailer, or to retrieve people from ditches or mud). Works better than on the front I think it has more uses on the rear. I welded 2 d-rings on the bumper. Mounted it to the frame via 1/2" ar360 steel. I totaled a 1990 t-bird that i did not see behind me! If somebody rearends me they will have to hit me hard enough to bend the frame before they do any damage.
Cost around $1000 for the winch and everything else except labor.
Just a little story
