Did a search, didn't really find it. Dealer replaced Fluid in rear diff for me today ( And even used my own AMSOIL... I was amazed). I gave them 5 qts, they gave me one back when I picked up the truck. Was the 4 qts what my 11. 5 Lim slip should have took to bring it up to the full line?? Thx!

Yes. Mine took exactly 4 till it ran out the hole.

What did D/C determine was the best level to fill up the rear axles ? I remember reading a thread once and there appeared to be lots of confusion as to what distance to the fill hole the axle fluid was supposed to be.

There is a fill line on my rear diff cover. Before I left it there I said make sure you do/ do not do 2 things

#1 Don't add Friction modifier

#2 Only fill to the fill ine, not the hole!

Both were written on my work order! At least the service advisor knew about the modifier... last time, he didn't, looked at me like I was dumb until I pulled out the owners manual and showed him in BOLD PRINT!... Thanks for the advice!

Maybe on the '04. 5s on the '03s you fill it to the hole + or - a 1/4". Just read it in the manual.

My 04. 5 manual says the same thing - fill it till it runs out the hole and you are good to go.

My 04. 5 manual says NOT to fill it to the hole, that it is NOT to go over the Fill line printed on the diff cover. Needs to be 1/4 inch BELOW the hole. Who knows if they filled it correctly or to the hole! LOLOL Anyway, I can't see where it would make gobs of difference. THanks for the replys!

My owners manual is #81-326-0428, Second Edition. I have an 04. 5. On page 351, it reads:

"The fluid level should be 3/4" +- 1/4" below the fill hole on all 10. 5" and 1/4 +- 1/4" on all 11. 5 Rear Axles. "

The way I understand this, it can be filled to the fill hole and that is with in DC parameters.

I was on call last week and my truck was at work, so I did not have access to my truck over the weekend.

I just changed mine today with Mobil 1 75W90. My manual also states to fill it to the hole + or - a 1/4", but the fill line of the cover is about 3/4" below the bottom of the hole. I filled up to the bottom of the hole and used 4oz short of 4 qts.

I have my 5 quarts (better too much than too little... I live in the sticks) of Valvoline 75W90 GL5 Full Synthetic..... I purchased for $6. 33 per quart plus tax. I'm going to check level prior to changing and fill to the bottom of the fill hole. Hope it's not a messier job than the engine oil change. Now gotta drive it for a few miles to warm it up some before changing.

friction modifier won't hurt anything in there in my opinion. they are saying not to add it b/c of the fluid they use, but it won't hurt to add it.

Friction modifier can cause problems in 04.5's

I switched to AMSOIL about 3000 miles ago, when I started this thread. During the same day while driving around my rear diff began to grind on corners, especially when pulling. I was told the AMSOIL already had the friction modifier in it. So I switched it out at this last oil change and ALL of the grinding immediatly stopped. It sure mad ethe diff run quiet though!
