I will be changing the oil in the rear diff shortly to Amsoil and was wondering what gasket sealant you all use. There does not appear to be a cork gasket but a rubberized sealant - possibly an RTV type sealant.

Please advise.

The factory uses a grey RTV. I prefer the permatex brand and used grey on my own, no leaks at all. Be sure you put some of the sealant on the threads of the bolts in the lower half of the diff cover, they are drilled through and will leak if you do not coat them Hope this helps.

:D Go donw to NAPA and ask for Item # 765-2696 made by Permatex. Title is GASKET , the RIGHT STUFF. Guarntee it will not leak at all.

GASKET INFO

Napa Cork Gasket #P18562 somebody had that # posted a while back and said it is the gasket for the F & R Diff. covers. When we changed sons 99 we used the gray color and no leaks. When I did mine I used gray and several thousand later it stated to seap,no drips. So I took it off and used black color this time and its still dry. Maybe I didn't let it cure long enough or clean it that good probably something I did but its still dry.

I just changed my rear diff lube to the Amsoil 75-140, and used the blue silicone Permatex on the surfaces and the black #2 Permatex on the bolts. No problems so far.

I have used the orange stuff, blue stuff and black stuff. As long as it is rated for oil, and a little heat resistent, it will work. Changed mine diff 5 time already. Never a leak.

More important to get everything very clean prior to sealent. Brake clean works very good.
