I am gonna change out my gear lube. What I was shocked about is that the gasket is a non-stocked item. I know they are reusable, but I would never change out the fluid without a spare in case I damage it.

So I asked the parts manager why, if the service department does the lube changes all the time, would they not have at least one on hand? He said they don't remove the pumpkin!!!

whoa!!!

I haven't used an actual gasket in a few years. A product I use with great sucess on my Early Bronco when I change diff fluids is called "The Right Stuff" made by Permatex. Its a gasket maker that holds very well and I have never had a leak.

I have had both of mine off twice, it is not a normal gasket you would really have to try to damage it were you could not use it. Take it off you will be surprised. I also would not use anything but the factory gasket on it with no sealant.

Bert,

Cool then I won't worry about it... They want 22. 85 at the friendly Dodge Parts Counter. Looks like I can get a couple of changes out of it before replacing. Saves me a trip.

They must suck/pump the old fluid out?

Dave

That is what he said, they have a vaccum thing they use. So I don't think they are doing much to get the fluid out of the axle tubes... or checking the ring and pinon...
