So I just got my Maghytec cover fitted on the rear dana 80 and have just driven home (60 kms/40 miles) and when I was pulling in to park I noticed a strange grabby vibration(like when tires rub on the control arms) like a ratcheting driveline. So I checked the dipstick of my brand new diff cover and the magnet already had what looked like a whole load of metal flakes stuck to it :--)

The diff was warm to touch but only vaquely so.

I rang the mechanic and found out he didn't put any additive in the fluid!! :{

but would that cause so much metal to 'come loose'???

I will try and get some additive tomorrow but... .

any suggestions???

no additive explains the clicking, you can get that after driving only a couple miles and itll take about 50-100 miles for the additive to fully work back into the clutches(found it out the hard way) as for the metal it was probably in the housing to begin with, usually likes to hide in the axle tubes.

Thanks if that is the case it takes a HUGE weight off my shoulders. I leave on Monday for my roadtrip down to central america so I don't need any more truck issues right now :D

Any ideas on a part number for that LSD additive. I had been using the ford stuff and was happy with it... . even though it stinks :-laf

Thanks for the reply... hope I can get hold of the stuff quickly... I think the ford stuff is more readily available though...

dont use any thing but chrysler addative. I speak from expierence, the after market stuff doesnt work .

96ram, FourBarR is offering his advice and "speaking from experience". You are taking a journey that you don't want interupted with a failure. Play it as safe as possible - get the stuff from DC - they should have plenty in stock. Have a safe trip.

Ok just spoke to the dealership of the area(two hours away :{ and to far to get the additive in time before I set out) and the guy I spoke to admitted that the GM product aka AC Delco was equivalent as the rear ends in those trucks are also Dana. After all our diffs are Dana and not DC :cool:

I expect to burn in hell for not listening to your good advice and I'll post on here again if it all goes belly up on the drive south. Thanks again!

"GM has been using AAM axles for a number of years and DC switched to them in 03 AAM does not use a LSD additive"

Then I guess Canada is behind the times because the local GM guys still sell the stuff :-laf

but seriously thanks for the info.

I use royal purple and add no additive, it's already mixed. Just short of 435k miles and no problems. I'm wondering about that metal though, I don't think the clutch material will stick to a magnet. Good travels to you.
