I have a early 2004 Ram 2500 QC SB 4X4 HO CTD (305HP 555lb-ft) 3. 73 limited slip. How can I tell whether I have a 10. 5" or 11. 5" rear differential? My first concern is with the proper differential fluid level. For the 10. 5" it is supposed to be 3/4" down from the fill hole, the 11. 5" is supposed to be 1/4" down from the fill hole. I checked the fluid level on the first service I performed (about a week ago, the dealer did the very first service free), and the rear diff fluid level (at first) seemed lower than I expected, basically it was not the same level with respect to the front diff. This might be the tip-off.

The second reason I am asking is I am considering a Mag-Hytech (sp?) diff cover when I change the diff fluid. Would like to get the correct one.

Thanks for any help.

I believe the 2500's have the 10. 5"diff like the 2nd Gens had the D70 in the 2500 and the D80 in the 3500. I could be wrong though. I'm not 100% sure.

GearyT is right check your glovebox. However Dodge only uses 11. 5 with your HO and 10. 5 with SO or Hemi's :-laf The 2500 or the 3500 issue no longer matters.

Mag - Hyec

If you get a Mag - Hytec, make sure you get the right one. The one that I put on mine (and got directly from Mag - Hytec) ends in a small case "a"... . something like 11. 5 - 14a . . I don't have the paperwork handy. ... . It works great... Gerry

Thanks,

Like usual, the ansxer was right underneath my nose, in the glove box. 9. 25" front axle and 11. 5" rear axle.

Any cons to the Mag - Hytec diff covers?

The new PML's look cooler(I have black with brushed fins) I believe, and have more clearance for large spare tires. Cheaper too.

Compared to the Mag, the PML uses all the mounting bolts, it is about $100 less, and it can be bought without a powder coating that helps it to disipate heat better. Another thing is the dipstick on the Mag is not accurate as compared to the fill hole on the origional cover, if you go by the dipstick you will end up putting about 2 quarts over the level Dodge reconmends.

Sounds like there was a mistake at the factory. When I was looking for mine, everything Dodge printed said that on the 2500 the 10. 5" diff came with the SO, 11. 5" diff was for the HO. 3500 trucks had the 11. 5" diff regardless of SO or HO.

it was an option that could be added, not a mistake. The SO's with auto's came with the 10. 5. The SO's with manuals could come with either the 10. 5 or the 11. 5's.

Learn something new everyday. I guess since I didn't want an SO, I didn't pay that close of attention to the options available... ...

Thanks for all the info. The PML covers look good (and less $$). I'll call you in about 4500 miles when I need to change the fluid for the first time.
