2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Rear differential cover gasket or not?

I am getting ready to change the rear fluid and purchased a cover gasket for the rear end, I was reading some other threads about the fluid change and most are using an adhesive sealant vice gasket. Did they change to gaskets or sealant for the 01's?

I don't think there is a gasket. My 95 had RTV sealant on the cover. I'm assuming this hasn't changed. Jeff

96 = sealant

I have used sealant many times and it works very well with no leaks. I use the ultra-copper. CPFF said to make sure whatever sealant you use always says "ultra".

I agree with the other 2 posts. Take the gasket back and get a tube of RTV Ultra in place of it.

Get a MAG-HYTEC cover with O ring seal.

I personally have a Mag-Hytec diff. cover at both ends... now. Before the front cover was available I modified a plain one I purchased from Dynatrac. Before I installed the new front cover I looked for a replacement for the RTV that was utilized for sealing the OE cover. A friend of mine at NAPA looked through his books and found me a Dana 60 cover gasket that worked perfectly! I installed the cover per my usual method... a thin layer of Loctite 515 on both faces of the gasket (i. e. , 100% coverage). After careful torquing of the cover bolts, I've found this method to seal so well, not only are there no leaks, there are no traces of weeping either.



I was a real happy camper...



that is until Roy finally released his fancy new front Mag-Hytec diff. cover that I had reserved for over two years. And you know how that went...



as trick as the modified Dynatrac cover was, I had to say adios to that bad boy so I could add that sweet new Mag-Hytec cover!

My 2002 doesn't use a gasket on the Dana 80. I used Permatex High-Temp gray RTV to seal it - that looks like what the factory used originally.

Silicone is so simple and easy,why even bother with a gasket which will eventually leak.



Any good Permatex Ultra Silicone will work well.



Another excellent product is the "Right Stuff" from Permatex. Is actually more like a urethane than silicone,and far superior. It's pretty much all we use now.

same here screw the gasket my 01 came with sealant and it still and always will use sealant



i used a gasket once in my 96 what a pain



unless you plan to remove the cover every hundred miles to inspect wear, id use sealant

I vote for Ultra Copper. It just looks KEWL, and I used it on both my front and rear (dana 80). No gaskets on there originally. I might go M-H cover later, but for now, the stocker is fine-- and does NOT leak.

Gasket

No gasket used at factory & none needed. I bought the RTV @ dealer for about $9..... Probably paid twice as much as but got the OEM RTV. No leaks.

No gasket

I used to use gaskets at work until I found that they almost always leak even with sealant on both sides. After I started using RTV only and tossing the gaskets I had no leaks at all.
