I may be completely mistaken but I'm thinking a gasket is not used. I think Permatex sealer from a tube is normally used.

The rear gasket is reusable many times over. It is plastic with a dbl row of embedded rubber seals.

This is a pic of the reusable transmission gasket. The rear dif cover gasket is the same style.

Thanks folks, I remember the 99 I had just used the Permatex blue stuff like Harvey said, didn't know on this one and I need to change the lubricant. I looked up the gasket last night and found it to be from $23. + to over $50. 00 so I didn't want to have to go to the credit union to finance a gasket if I don't need it. Thanks again. bg

Reusable yes, forever no.

I ditched mine about 30k ago... they are rubber over STEEL which will eventually rust and cause a seep/leak.

I used gray Permatex RTV, and its holding fine.

My apologies for bad information. My previous '06 and current '08 both had a Mag-Hytec differential cover installed the day I brought them home from the dealer. I don't think a gasket is used on the Mag-Hytec. It may have an O ring in a groove.

The truth about the matter is I have a friend who was a Dodge dealer tech when I met him years ago who does all my service and repair work. My contribution to the work is limited to handing him an occasional tool or part and writing a check when he is finished. I avoid lots of fumbling and mistakes by paying the man who knows how to do the job right the first time.
