2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Rear Differential Cover ?

My rear "pumpkin" cover is leaking so I took it off to replace the gasket. To my surprise there is no gasket there just silicone. Do I need a gasket or should I just use Silicone? Thanks Pete

Silicone is the material of choice.

The key to a good seal is cleanliness, let all the gear oil run out so it doesn't run over the prepped area. Apply a liberal coat of sealant and let it set-up as instructed before bolting up the cover. Then let the differential set for 24 hours before adding new gear oil. Works every time for me, even on chrome covers.

I personally use just the standard black RTV and put it right together after things are cleaned up and fill with oil after an hour or two. Never had a leak in all the rears I have worked on. I have used gaskets on some in the past but stopped that long ago. They always leaked a little even with sealer on them.

Thanks for the info. I cleaned it really well and used blue RTV and so far no leaks. Took about 3 1/2 quarts to fill.
