I am getting quite a few shavings on the plug. How can I check tolerances to see how close to failure it may be.

Also has anyone had luck using the Lucas Gear Oil in either the transmission or the diff. to reduce noise or reduce wear?

Thanks Charles

To check the necessary clearances you just need to pull the cover off and jack up the rear. You will need some type of micrometer to get the correct measurements.

I have a Dana 80 and when I changed gears at 75k I found out the carrier bearing shims were not preloaded right at the factory and the bearings were in the process of faliure.

Inspection is the only way I know of.

Note: DC would not warrantee even the cost of the new carrier "we did not do the work, we do not warrantee it unless we find it". Of course the DC labor cost was greater than the cost of the new carrier AND the labor cost of the shop that did the labor.

Thanks for the info - I do have the cover off and the total truck is off the ground, as the transmission is out at the moment (new clutch).

So my question is am I checking for lash from one direction to the other while off the ground or what? If so what is the maximum tolerance of that lash.

Thanks Charles

backlash should be between . 12mm and . 2 mm

runout should be less than . 05mm

A service manua is very helpful with this procedure. You might also check the tooth contact pattern.
