First off, have a 2001 auto. , dana 70 suregrip, 3. 54 gears. About 5,000 miles ago I installed Amsoil series 2000 75W-90 gear lube, I also installed a MagnaGuard aluminum differential cover. This is the type that has the plastic sight glass with 2 magnets and when the oil drains down the magnets it catches the metal particles. But anyway, here is my question, After I drive the truck for about an hour or so at highway speeds I crawl under there with a creeper and you can literally not hold your hand on the cover for even 1 second. Now to me, that would be in the 160 to 180 degree range, after I'm done driving the truck, when I lift the hood and touch the motor parts and I know the motor runs at 180 degrees, it feels the same as the rear differential cover. Do you think this is too hot or is this normal? Don't seem normal to me. The cover even gave me 2 to 3 extra quarts of capacity. What do I have to loose to try LE oil? If it doesn't change the temperature then I will just leave it in. Can it be any worse or better than Amsoil? I guess I need to get one of those $100 napa point and shoot thermometers and then I will know the exact temperature. Any advice? Thank you in advance for any info on this matter.

I think thats normal. I noticed that on my 97 gasser and on my present truck. (too hot to touch on both)

I have a 80 rear end with the stock cover and I'm running AmsOil ser 2000 75W-90. I just got back from towing in one of my students cars with a strap and he raod the brakes the whole way. Using my lazer temp measuring device I am at 178 Deg F. It is 90 Deg here already this morning. So I think what you are discribing is normal.

Seems to me I read where those using a Mag-Hytec differential cover with a temp. gauge installed were seeing temps. in the 180-200 degree F. range. This was with a quality synthetic.

I use a Mag-Hytec cover which increases the capacity to 7-8 qts of gear oil, and my Dana 80 still maxes out at 215F when towing my ~10,000 lb trailer at highway speeds. This seems a little high to me, but this is the first time I have ever used a temp. gage in the rear end, so I have nothing to compare this to.

Guys I drive over the road and all of the gauges rears, trans, and engine temp run within 10 degrees. So I think at approx 180-190 on a rearend is normal

THanks guys for all your responses. I'm not worried now, I guess I won't go with LE after all. LOL GENE. After traveling for a 125 miles nonstop at the speed limit and then some, got home, crawled under the truck and stuck a deep fat frying thermometer in the oil of the rear differential, 10 minutes later, 170 was max. So I feel alot better. So I guess the 190 degrees that somebody was observing may seem a bit hot but for me I can sleep better. I guess that's all that really matters. LOL. Again thanks for all your responses.

I know this is an old topic, but I want to bring it to the top as I believe it is relevant to one of the responses to my post on my voided differential warranty. Until last weekend I had been running Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 in my rear. I saw temps in the area of 190 degrees (give or take a few) on a recent trip to Atlanta. I put in Amsoil Series 2000 75W-140 on Saturday and saw temps of about 190 degrees yesterday. I think it is normal. I have not had a chance to tow and get temperature readings. That comes this weekend.

Towing my trailer in 94 degree heat I saw temps in the 215-220 degree range. This was at a steady speed of 65 mph in cruise. I'm using Amsoil Series 2000 75W-140. After my analysis from Blackstone Labs and talking to Roy at Mag-Hytec I would not go back to 75W-90 in the rear, as often as I tow. At the next fluid change I will be switching to LE-607.

John,
Can't wait to hear what kind of temps you have after your change!

Another thing, I have heard this line a lot-
"After talking to Roy at Mag-Hytec... . "

After I talked to Roy, I didn't buy his recommended oil. Maybe I missed something?

Could someone explain to me what Roy's credentials are? Where he gets his information?
I like Roy, I think his covers are one the finest aftermarket goodies made for our trucks. I own one, and plan on getting one for the front.
But after running into people who live in the far North who bought Roy's favorite straight 90W because he said it would be fine, I have to speak up.

Just get a second opinion before you purchase a straight 90W because a cover manufactorer suggested it.

Maybe Joe Donnelly would care to share his temperature readings?
Gene
