disk VS drum

I think disk is the way to go. I did full brake job on 3500 last summer and it cost me 450$ at hole sale cost "just parts"; drums pads new hardware. Good luck locating correct drum. I found compleat disk kit to be about 500$. with cheeper repacement pads much better performance. The only reason I did not do the conversion is on the dulleys you must run 17 in wheel. I had just bought brand new 16's. some people say proportins are not set up correct but proportin valves can be bought for 39$ from JEGS. I thik the disk is the way to go.

I have not done a conversion but I have an 03 C&C dually rear axle that is disc. Definitely not 17 inch wheels. It looks as if the emergency brake setup will fit the first gen with minor or even no mods. This will be an axle swap and not a retrofit. They look like serious size brakes.

Do a forum search. From what I recall, alot of guys who switched to rear discs aren't happy with them.

Converting to rear discs was one of the best modifiations I've done. I would have done it right when I bought my truck if I had known what a difference it would've made. I love how rear discs stop MUCH improved vs. drums, especially in a panic stop situation. No more pulling to one side when you brake, or having to constantly crawl underneath to manually re-adjust the 'automatic-adjusters' .

Did you install a different master cylinder? Who made your kit?

 My egr rear disc conversion is working out great. Panic stops are no longer "Diaper Friendly Events". My truck with oversize tires and camper just would not stop. I went the Pakbrake route only to still have lag time in panic situations(other than that it works great). The installer did have some minor parts snafus(mounting plate didn't fit properly,EGR replaced). Also the parking brake isn't up to stock standards. The ultimate solution is scoring a Dana 70 or 80 from a junkyard 2001. 5 and up. Direct boltup. The installer has been looking for one for his '99 for ages to no avail. This is the next best setup. It was this or take out a family of four on the freeway and grieve the rest of my life.

Yes, I did use a different MC. One with a larger bore to move enough fluid volume to achieve a good brake pedal feel and height.

I pieced together my own conversion. But the way I did it looks similar to kits made by EGR and others.

hey Desert Rat, what parts did you use? i'd like to do something like that, but i can't see dropping 500-700 bucks on parts i can scrounge.
