You are right. What started out a simple U joint replacement has gone way overboard.... Well in for a penny in for a pound.

Ask how I know... had the same happen to me with the front driveshaft, at the end I bought a new one AFTER I spent a lot of money for rebuilding the old one without success.
I wrote about it in an other thread.

Update. I had found the yoke on Summet auto parts listing said that it was a MOPAR part box even said Mopar on it. Part inside wasn’t even close. My guess a bad Chinese copy? The thing was machined off center if installed the driveshaft would have wobble. I didn’t even try to install. Summet said send back for full refund. I now have another ordered from Mopar parts online. There is a discrepancy about the part number. My friends 2017 has the same part in it but the part number comes up a different number than what comes up with my vin number. Guess I’ll see what shows up in the mail next week.
I’m really starting to think I should trade this thing in.

The same thing happened to my former 03 Ram 2500 with 315/70-17s on the rear drive shaftl, u-joints shot at 210K on the clock. My niece has the truck, so my BIL takes the truck to a specialty shop, they replace the ujoints, balance the driveshaft, and all is well in Pleasantville. I know you mentioned taking to a shop earlier, maybe it's time to find one and go.

I made fun of him for not replacing the ujoints himself, but after reading this, now think he did the right thing.

Good luck getting it figured out.

I’m jus trying to replace the stupid vibration damper that I destroyed while heating and pressing out the old U joints. Truck is driving ok seems to be much better vibration wise with the new U joints. I would leave it alone but my fear is that Damper is there for a reason to protect something inside the expensive transmission ? Some Engineer thought it had to be there or it wouldn’t be. I just want the right part.

Yes same .. I’m showing two different part numbers the second being 68238005AA which shows the damper like I had. This truck has the larger 5” dia drive shaft.

That's odd some have them and others don't.
At this point your probably better off going to your local dealership with your VIN and asking for the correct part number. Hopefully the online place sets you up right.

That would be a real *#& move on their part, especially if you have spent any kinda money there.

you should be able to use your vin on the mopar online part sites. that should take any confusion out of the situation. i suspect the transmission side damper was used on all the 1piece shafts. i know the pw used it in that same year

My 14 is a one piece shaft and does not have it.
I've not noticed a need for one at 125k and counting....
No vibration, no seal leaks, etc.

the little details are probly changed frequently. some new trucks i noticed have a damper on the differential side of the shaft.
