Rear drum glazing...help

My rear drums are terrible!!!!! I have had to have them scuffed and resurfaced 3 times in the last 15000 miles. I don't have the money to convert to rear disc. I will never get drums again. Any help. Midas has been doing my brake work. maybe thats one of my probs



What can I do to make them last a little bit longer

if they are glazing they must be rubbing all the time (at least that's what i remember)... if you don't want to do it, take it somewhere else and have them checked to see if they're adjusted too tight

What do you meen glazing? Do they squeak? Or do you have a brake pulsation? Or do they lock up?

I have a 2000 3/4 4x4 that I bought used in december with 30,000 miles. The rear brakes seem to be dragging all the time. They squeal when I try to stop and really don't feel like I have any rear brakes. Any suggestions???? I need to pull the drums and have a look.

I was talking to a guy (can't remember his name) at our local chapter meeting. He said that the axle shaft seals will leak a little grease into the brake drum, and cause the back brakes to be ineffective (ie. no friction).

Next time you pull your drums, you might want to look for a leak from the axle seals.

Mine also squeals when approaching a full stop. Only seems to be on right side tho. What is scuffing the drums and what's it supposed to do,remove the glaze?

Last time I pulled the drums to check about 8,000 miles ago the shoes looked good,axle seals no leaks and drums looked OK. Can't figure this one out for the life of me. Only seems to do it on that side.

Will check them again at 40,000 when It's time to rotate tires.

When we have brake squeaks on cars we use a chemical made by BG that is called stop squeal. Some times it works great and other times it doesn't. We sell a luxury car line and have different pads for the same vehicles, because some people drive differently. The pads are harder or softer depending on what we need. The Goverment required car manufacters to remove aspestus (sp?) from brake pads and they haven't figured out what to use yet. BMW used crushed walnut shells at one point. I also think that some times on semi-metalic brake there will be a large chunk or sliver of metal that will cause a noise and until you replace the pad or shoe it won't stop. All brakes get a glaze. This should not be a problem. If you feel you don't have proper braking from the back there might be some thing else wrong. Mine has discs but maybe the drums have a proportioning vavle in the back that can be adjusted. Hope this helps.

Iam not a brake expert but this is what I have been told



Glazing on drum brakes is when brakes heat up due to dragging or riding brakes. glaze is when the brake dust heats up and coats the drums and shoes with a hard slick coating. making the brakes kinda useless.



Yes you scuff the to remove the glazing.

didn't check the year's on ya'lls trucks, but there is a TSB out there for squeeking rear brakes... involves replacing the shoes with an updated part which uses different material.

The TSB is for 2000 model trucks and only covered under warranty if the truck has less than 12,000 miles. Warranties are a bunch of crap cause they always have loop holes. "wearable items" such as clutches, brakes, tires, etc. are only warrateed for 12,000 miles. Please correct me if I am wrong, but that's what my "Friendly, five star dealer" told me.

You might try backing up with the emergency brake on, it will scuff the brake and might help get rid of the squeal.
