How do the Drums/Hubs come apart?

Just press out the studs?

I have new drums ready to go. I just want to be sure i don't screw something up when I take the old ones apart.

BTW: where is a good place to pick up a factory manual for this rig? The Chiltons just isn't cutting it.

Thanks a bunch,

Stevie G

I used a brass hammer to knock the studs out - the brass won't deform the threads. They actually came out pretty easily..... getting 'em back in was another story. ;) I used the impact wrench to draw the studs back in (put a couple washers between the drum and flat side of the lug nut), working in the same pattern you would use installing a wheel. I'm sure someone else has a better way. :p

EDIT: I picked up my FSM off of eBay. I see them every once in a while, or you can buy the CD version - those are available most of the time. I bought the CD first and it appeared to be the same as the printed version, just organized differently.

Just as I figured.

Thanks for the reply.

i like to be sure of what I'm doing before I start since this is also daily transportation. It's a long walk to the parts store.

I have had better luck driving in the studs from the back side with a heavy punch. Set the face of the drum on a solid surface and leave the studs free to move in and they drive in and set fairly easy.

Using a nut and washers is an iffy operation to get the studs set. More often than not the threads strip on the nut before the stud is completely set. A press is the ideal way but a heavy punch works well also.

I tried driving mine out when I did the rear brakes. That worked pretty good. Trying to drive the new ones in was another story! Finally gave up and had them pressed in. Best $20 I think I ever spent!:)

I would just buy new studs and press them in. That way you know you have all good threads. I bought a small press for $100 to press press apart some jeep axles. Its not a bad toll to have in the garage.
