My mileage for when the problem showed up seems to be about the same as Casey's. At about 14,000 it got really loud, and I couldn't take it anymore. I have almost 6,000 on the new axle and it's still silent.

As far as what to do if the dealer won't fix it, if you can I'd visit another dealership first. If that doesn't work you can call DC at 1-800-992-1997. CALMLY describe your issue and never at any time be anything but nice.

Rear-end whine

Casey... ... ... ..... just had mine done at the dealer. Mech. said it was the 2nd one in six days. Pinion was set to deep in the ring gear. Same as the other one he changed. He let me watch the set up on ring gear and pinion and back lash. New gears, bearing and races. Whine started at 300 miles and got worst. Need to change my profile. 04. 5 Black 3500 DRW 4X4 ETH/DEE

Mine got a little loud when decelerating with the foot lightly on the pedal, at about the 60-65 range, only. That was when I brought it home from St. Louis, but since mixing the driving up with towing, hauling load of logs from CT to VA, and lots of short trips, the noise has left. There was no abnormal color in the oil or any shavings or large pieces of metal on the magnet, just a glittery sludge, and not much of that. Be interesting to see on the next oil change.

i'm not saying that i believed the amsoil was going to be the cure, just maybe quiet the noise down a little. but, my question still remains why does it now start @ around 55 when before switching it didn't start until about 63? maybe less friction... i'm puzzled

I have a Mag-Hytec cover on my whineing 03 rear end. Can a dealer use this as a excuse not to fix the problem? I just installed the cover and am using Valvoline 75-90 Synthetic and no difference in noise.

Not having the stock cover and recommended lube (if and when you take it in) will just give them the excuse they want! I had problems with 2K 75w90 and have found better choices. I know now, I shouldn't have had any brand 75w90 for as hard as I was towing but I had heard (from Dana themselves) that the 2k 75w90 tested better than anything else they'd tried - including 140s. All I got to say is - they must not have tested what I'm using now. I've read the AAs use 75w90 for all applications. They MUST be tougher than the Danas if they can get away with that! Craig
