2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Rear end pinion seal leakin?

Wondering if I can just count the number of turns to get the pinion nut off to replace the seal, and reinstall that amount without messing up the backlash of the gears... trucks has 137k on it... . i did it with me GM 14 bolt and never had any problems... thanks Russ... . Love the gauges I just got in... anyone with a 98. 5 and up needs to get that f/g installed... had mine checked at a shop when i bought it in late dec 04, did my gauges last weekend... . O fp... changed the lift pump the next day... 15 idle (thats all my gauge will read to) and 10 WOT... hopefully saved my IP... . had to tow a buddy to the dealer a week before. . 2200 later they replaced the injection pump but not the lift pump... ?? thought you did both if the IP was bad... . he had 18 days of warranty left... . merrry xmas. . lol... . Do not worry about the backlash. The pinion preload is set with shims. Just tighten the nut and torque to spec. Backlash is set with the carrier bearing shims. Pinion depth and preload are set with the pinion shims.



From exxperience, use a new nut, and go to a dodge dealer to get the seal. The mopar piece is a very good piece compared to the aftermarket stuff. I have tried about eight other brands (well known brands), and IMHO, they are junk compared to the MOPAR piece.

You might also check the shaft of the pinion yoke to see if there is a groove worn in it. If there is a new seal will not last that long. The groove is worn into it by the seal!

I know my 97 did the groove thing so I had to replace the seal and yoke!
