Heh yea that would be crazy for rush hour. Once this thing latches on though, it does NOT let go until whatever it has is split. I`ve only tried it on wood, but i`d hate to see what would happen if it latched onto a body part, namely a knee or leg.

Unfortunately the screw turns counter-clockwise, so you could only use it on one side or the other (forward or reverse). I use it in reverse in my driveway, it works best on my passenger wheel.

Hopefully I get time to split more later this week, my work has been killin me. We just put in tandem instantaneous Rinnai water heaters in a restaurant for over $12k. Took an 850lb water heater down 22 steps. . yikes. my back is ache'nnn

I have seen those screw-wedge splitters. Makes me nervous though, with my luck I can hear Bill Engvall saying "Here's your sign!!" Does the ER have a protocol for stabilizing the wedgy thing when its lodged between two ribs??:-laf

I'm still trying to picture in my mind how the thing works. I know it screws into the log, but how do you keep the log from turning with it and how do you put pressure against the log and splitter? I don't think I want to be holding onto the log while that baby is working...

I keep having visions of being spun and flopped in a blur by my pickup's rear wheel...

Kiohio, I have a friend with a lathe, I'll make one for the other side. Then the redneck can put them front a rear, split 4 times faster than desinged:-laf

The theory intrigues me, but one problem. Rental house and nowhere to burn the wood.

LOL, It does sound kinda scary, but no worse then using an old wringer washer, they will suck yer arm in, in a heart beat. Don't ask me how I know:-laf

The log chunk rests on the ground and the screw goes in the side of the log, not the end as in a normal splitter. I guess if ya had a real tough log it might jack up the truck:D

I'm around PTO shafts, rotary cutter blades and the like all the time... ... .....

This thing still scares me LOL

Welp I split another full cord today, worked flawlessly. I`m getting better with experience, kinda like riding a bike. .

Made a mod to my exhaust, a kind of temporary stack to push the fumes 6' up and away from the work area. Made it out of 6' of 4" flue pipe, a 4" elbow, and a hose clamp. . You can see the elbow in the vids.

I have 3 videos of the setup, I cant get the video with the full stack shot to upload to youtube for some reason, I dunno... But I have two others that shows me splitting, they're about a minute and a half to 2 mins. .

Here they are. .

YouTube - Stickler -- Splitting logs 1 of 2

YouTube - Stickler -- Splitting 2 of 2

I`m splitting some undried ash in the second pic, and its givin me a hard time. I didnt have my hand axe around, so I was fightin with em. . doh. .

I`ll add the other video showing my stack (heh) when I get youtube to accept the friggin thing. .

I have some -large- (36"+) maple rounds to split, mebe I`ll get a vid of those also. Theyre nice and dry and split well, its just a bear lugging around a 150-200lb log lol

Go and buy a real safe splitter.

Can you say YEE-HAW:p

I just dont want to see anyone get hurt.

People get hurt or worse DIE in my field of work everyday.

June 22, of last year I had a 12' ladder walk out from under me, landed on my hip on the concrete and busted my pelvis in 3 spots.

I was off of work for 7 months, had to learn to walk again, extensive physical therapy, blah, blah, blah.

Went back to work in Jan. of this year and to this day have problems getting out of bed and have pain everyday.

Just dont want to see someone get hurt to save a few bucks.

Sorry, for the rant.

It seems to me that if you were splitting wood with the rh axle and the lh axle was on the ground. then you must hace a normal open centre diffential. From, what I understand was that the knot jammed the rh axle and it overcame the frictional difference and made the LH spin. There won't be much you can do about it since you are splitting in reverse, IE using the LH e-brake to stop it from spinning ever. some weight in the back of the p/u would probably work ok. The amount of torque you can apply through your spider and side gears I'n not real sure of, should be plenty for the splitter though.

Note: it's just a thought but for safety sake it may be a good idea to have some sort of " line lock" on the front brakes just in case the truck wanted to move.

Thanks for the info WIonson...

I have now put the drivers rear tire on the ground, and heavily wedged it with some large logs. I jacked up the tire and lowered it down onto the wedge of the log so it has more resistance. I also put about 500lbs of sand in the bed to give the truck resistance to move.

Split off another 1/2 cord today of those huge damn maple logs. I`m -beat-. Moving those things around is like trying to push a cow. Usually aint happenin. . But, I persisted and it worked out fine.

Glad I have the open diff, the lsd would not work right at all. . (sigh of relief)

tnx for all the input guys

That is some cool kind of gizmo, tp0d. I finally got the right activex thingamabob downloaded and could finally view the videos you were so kind to take the time and trouble to provide for us (Thanks!).

I like versatile and ingenious tools and will have to look into getting one of those. How much did your's cost and where did you buy it?

Some film director somewhere will eventually get a look at one of these in action (maybe your videos) and you'll be seeing it in "Saw VI" or something shortly thereafter! The diabolical possibilities are endless.

How about a shoulder-mounted version for opening doors? The cops would love it. Or for opening ATM machines? The crooks would love it. Terrorist won't talk? Well just "Say hello to my leetle friend... "

Very cool !

lol SFB that is some original stuff there. I cannot compete.

SRath:

Bought it on ebay, for 245 shipped. I weighed the cost of a new hydraulic splitter (1000+), or renting one (for 75/day), or buying the stickler. Though I had my doubts of it working, the stickler has proved to be the smarter choice.

A shoulder mounted version? lol that would be nuts. Dunno if you could hold on to it... I`ve messed with trying to hold a log, and once that thing digs in, there is NO holding it back. Gotta dump that torque to ground, or all it does is spin on the screw.

gonna be splitting again tomorrow, i have some more huge maple logs i need to finish up. .

I can definitely see where the temporary exhaust "stack" would be an excellent idea. A floor jack, lug wrench, and sturdy jack stands are all you need besides the Stickler otherwise. Do you need to use a throttle stick (aka "redneck cruise control") to raise your idle?

One thing though: Given the time you're spending with that Stickler, and after watching your videos numerous times, I think you owe it to yourself to get a more comfortable seat or at least a boat cushion! You might wake some night to find your wife playing tic-tac-toe in all the little grid squares that milk crate leaves on your backside! Mine got sore just watching.

I use a piece of 2x4 for my throttle control, it works well and has the correct weight to hold the throttle in one place. I run between 1000 and 1100 rpm when splitting.

As for the seat, I actually dont sit down very much, I just did it on the video to show the normal method of splitting. If I had someone handing me logs, I probably could sit and split all day no problem. The milk basket is actually pretty comfortable, I use them a lot at work when doing plumbing jobs, so I`m quite used to the texture. Jeans isolate the rumpus well also.

welp I have some more rounds to take care of... its off to warm up the truck and get back to splittin!

I think its cool. I just watched the video and when you bend over your T shirt gets real close. I wonder if it would flop you around or just make you shirtless? I'm laughing picturing it in my head but be carefull. You could probably wire up a swith to your fuel solenoid as and emergency shut down as to would take a little time to start flopping you around, you could pull the switch. Only one wire is needed.

My shirt never got within 6" of the tip of the stickler. Even so, I could definetly pull my shirt off the threads before anything could happen.

I also have a kill switch wired into my truck, its the yellow rope hanging above the wheel well. One light pull of less than 5lbs, and the truck is dead. I may be a little crazy, but I`m certainly not dumb. Worst problem I`ve had so far is a log that dislodged itself from the plywood base and flopped around at about 20rpms. Killed the engine and pulled it off, problem solved.

This is no more dangerous than a regular log splitter. I`ve seen hydraulic splitters blow a hose and spray fluid 20' in any direction. Also seen a weld cracked so hard from a splitting wedge it generated shrapnel and lodged in my buddy's calf... So pick your poison, I`m satisfied with mine :)

I was looking at the string and wondering. Good deal. I have about two cords to split but I have LSD. Trying to get the wife to let me put it on her 02-Saab-convertable. That would be a site. I don't think she will go for it.
