When in reverse, there is a squeaking sound coming from the rearend. It will only squeak if there is also torque applied to the driveline and more torque = louder squeak. If it's just rolling in reverse, no squeak.

The sound is much like wet sneakers squeaking on a smooth floor.

I had my Dad drive the truck in reverse with me standing alongside. It sounds like it's the rear pinion seal that's squeaking. Or maybe it's the dust seals on the rear u-joint. .

My truck made the same noise today when I backed it out of my shop.

I only have 29,000 miles on my truck and the U-joint is already bad. This is my first Dodge and that doesn't seem normal to me.

My Chebbies lasted at least 100k under the same conditions.

when my u-joints went out, it started off with the chirping when backing up. then it progressed to chirping when loading forward off a start, then from there it progressed to the point of one joint seizing totally [bad when you need to drive home in 4x4 to keep from shaking fillings out of head and limited to ~60kph :(]

from beginning of chirping to seizing was about 2 months time for me. .

U-joint it is. Got a case of the vibes on the highway today. Pulled over to check... ..... the bearing caps on the rear u-joint (driveshaft yoke only) were nice and hot, too hot to touch. Looks like that one is well done. Front u-joint was nice and cold, for a while anyway :( Time to call dealer tomorrow morning.

I wonder if I can get them to replace both u-joints  ..... The front one I bet is going to fry soon anyway.

Only 20k mi on the ticker so far.

Just got word from the dealer. Rear u-joint on rear driveshaft was replaced. I think next time I'll install some "real" u-joints myself. We'll see what happens to the front u-joint when I tow my boat this summer. :D

Do y'all know under what part of the warranty the u-joints, ball joints, front unit bearings etc. are covered under?

Sean

Was this covered under warranty?
